Two great movies this year, a handful of very good ones, and a decent bunch of solid ones. Not a great year, but not a bad one. Considering American cinema alone, though, it would seem pretty weak. Top 10:

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Michel Gondry)
Head-On (Fatih Akin)
Before Sunset (Richard Linklater)
3-Iron (Kim Ki-duk)
Nobody Knows (Hirokazu Koreeda)
Mountain Patrol (Lu Chuan)
Hotel Rwanda (Terry George)
A Very Long Engagement (Jean-Pierre Jeunet)
Kung Fu Hustle (Stephen Chow)
The Incredibles (Brad Bird)

Runners-up: Howl's Moving Castle, The Motorcycle Diaries, Mysterious Skin

Special mention: Paranoia Agent, which is excellent but maybe too long a series to pass as a movie or miniseries.

Also good (in rough order of preference): Vera Drake, The Sea Inside, Dogville, Shaun of the Dead, Innocent Voices, Dear Frankie, Millions, The Chorus, Pusher 2, The Woodsman, Undertow, Electric Shadows, Duck Season, Sideways, Friday Night Lights, Primer, Le Grand Voyage, Lila Says, Kamikaze Girls, The Machinist, Spider-Man 2, Million Dollar Baby, Hellboy, Mean Girls, Garden State, I Heart Huckabees, Finding Neverland, Stage Beauty, Dead Man's Shoes, Taegukgi, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, The Aviator, 2046, Spartan, Napoleon Dynamite, The Life Aquatic, Innocence

So what are your favorites of the year? What have I missed? What should I check out?

1983 & 1984:

Thanks. Added Maria Full of Grace and Hawaii, Oslo to my Netflix queue. For some reason I always forget Two Brothers exists because of Duma. Weird. I've been meaning to check out more of Jia's work -- I saw Platform, which I found rewarding but slow to sit through, so I've been waiting for a lower-stress work/school situation before tackling more of his ouvre (It's amazing how many bad movies I've watched largely because I don't have the energy at the end of the day to engage with a good one!). Maybe his later, state-approved pictures are more accessible? Ushpizin I'll throw on the "someday" list!

House Of Flying Daggers

I find this enjoyable enough but honestly -- sometimes I'm sorry Crouching Tiger was made. Zhang had made a string of great movies, and then after Ang Lee's success, suddenly switched gears and started making a bunch of pretty but, to me, forgettable martial arts epics instead. Maybe he would have done that anyway. I don't know. But that's the association that's in my head.

I can't believe I forgot Hirschbiegel's excellent Downfall this year!

Anyway, I've been very busy but 2005 is coming soon!

Collateral is good.

Sideways left me totally cold. The way people went on about Sideways still mystifies me. At best it is an "okay" movie.

I'm not embarrassed to say I really like Alien vs Predator.

I'm not embarrassed to say I really like Alien vs Predator.

I really really wanted to like it. All these years later, the thing that I most remember bugging me is how wrong they got the Predators. In the Predator movies, Kevin Peter Hall moved really gracefully, and then in this thing they strutted about like pro wrestlers. I know it's unreasonable to expect all members of a species to act the same, but for some reason it's that discontinuity, that minor lack of attention to detail, that's stuck with me.

I think I liked that movie better than Prometheus, though. big grin
