The developers - Pfizer and BioNTech - described it as a "great day for science and humanity".

A great day for Pfizer and BioNTech - who will make billions.

And I thought I was cynical!

They're welcome to it if it stops all this. The vaccine being developed in Oxford also sounds very promising. This is the big news of the day, I think it will even knock the US President stuff off the headlines.

Big corp use tax payer money to make themselves rich. No, we should all get free vaccinations and a large part of the profits should go back into the economy.

Agreed, it is big news. Only downside if you would call it is that isPfizer's vaccine requires it to be stored like in sub zero temps and you need 2 shots. So the mass storage of it and making it available widely and easily may be a challenge. But at 90+% efficacy that is amazing and if it holds scrutiny, this is actually fantastic news.

Yeah, it's going to be a truly massive & expensive job to inoculate everyone & it's going to take some time. I'd think frontline health workers first.

A friend and I agreed at work that homeless people should get the vaccine first, since they're the most vulnerable in our society.

The homeless population is going to skyrocket the first quarter of next year. frown

I'm thinking of going back to online purchasing except for perishables. I was in Walmart today and I see ppl walking around without masks, (there mandated in my area) and when I was in the checkout line the lady behind was so close she could smell my farts. I had to ask her to stand back! This while Covid cases are rising again. Do people not get it?!

Good for you asking her to stand back! I'm disgusted with most people not taking this seriously!

I believe in my state they've taken to sending kids back home. The restaurant owner I work for had his GM test positive and are closing for 14 days. Two people tested positive two weeks ago at another location but were only closed 4 days. So it must be getting worse. Stores are mandated to close at 10pm now again.

We are really paying for it in Minnesota being bordered by the do-nothing states of North and South Dakota and Wisconsin. ICU capacity in the Twin Cities is usually at 90% during flu season. It's already at 97%. There was a news story about a woman most likely dying after getting emergency surgery delayed because it took hours to find her a hospital bed. I imagine we are almost to the scenario that if your appendix burst, etc. you are most likely dead.

Osterholm is suggesting a 4-6 week strict national shutdown where the government pays salaries. Who knows if that will ever happen.

My brother's in-laws came down with covid after thinking it was a hoax. Mother-in-law was in the hospital for five days. They took it seriously those five days, but now it's back to being a hoax.

Gotta love my job talking about having everyone come back to the office now after successfully working from home since March. "It's easier to work on paper!!!" Yeah, no.

Just a quick update from the Grumpy Old Man... In the wake of the vaccine news, I swear I'll scream the next time someone exclaims, "Oh great, so Christmas and New Year as last year then"!

Just listened to the latest Osterholm Update podcast. Frightening. North Dakota case levels are higher than Italy was back in the spring when their hospital systems collapsed. He was reading e-mails from doctors in Minnesota. Minnesota only had two staffed ICU beds left on Friday. Hospitals here are already letting patients die from heart disease, etc. because there are no openings to treat them. People are collapsing in ERs from stuff other than COVID-19 and can't be treated. This is happening in Minnesota with some of the best doctors and hospitals in the entire world and our numbers aren't even as bad as some states.

People need to pull their heads from their butts and recognize the reality of the situation. Good news is that some vaccines will be available in the next few months. Hopefully when the elderly get vaccinated that will take some pressure off of the hospitals.

Texas is the first state to exceed 1,000,000 cases. We're #1 !!

El Paso is the worst hit, with PortaMorgues popping up all over town. People are being airlifted to hospitals in San Antonio, Houston and Dallas.

I've pretty much gone back to sheltering at home except for walks around my neighborhood and grocery shopping once per week.

To those who think social distancing and wearing a mask are too large of a sacrifice to bear, remember that Anne Frank lived in an attic for three years without TV or internet. Let that sink in.

Our state is creeping up and our Governor has banned all but 9 states from the non-quarantine list. We were told at a company wide meeting yesterday that work from home will probably continue through next year.

My niece was diagnosed with cancer and the trips for chemo have been frightening for her. Her baby just turned a year and she has a 3 year old. The numbers in her state are rising and her chemo is at risk. I don't know how people are coping.

Stay home, stay safe and save lives, including your own.

Edwzoomom, I am so sorry to hear of the difficulties your niece and her family are facing. I can't begin to imagine going through something like that, especially where babies are involved.

Please know that she and her children and family and you and your family are all in my prayers.

Love and prayers - jack
