In 1991, I joined the Great Expectations singles service ("video dating") in Sausalito, CA. I literally read through the profiles of every single woman in their "catalogs" (over 450 women), looked at their photos, and watched several videos. I then wrote a letter to ONE particular woman, and GE forwarded that letter to her. A week later, we had our first date at a fantastic seafood restaurant in San Francisco. Three hours into the date (after we'd walked to a bookstore and had dessert at Just Desserts), I knew she was going to be my girlfriend. Two weeks after we met, we put our respective GE memberships on "hold," basically pulling ourselves out of circulation for anyone else. One year later, I proposed (on my knee) on a beach in Pt. Reyes. Three months after that, we were married. And this coming October marks our 17th wedding anniversary. Worked for me! -- Jon

So posting about it at FSM hadn't done the trick, huh? What else have you tried?

FOUR FUCKING YEARS LATER.... And now I'm going to give you a slap around the head. Forget about a relationship. I'm going to say that again, because it's terribly important: FORGET ABOUT A RELATIONSHIP. In other words, ignore everyone's helpful and well-meaning advice above. (sorry, but it's clearly not working) Fill up your time with other things, and stop moping. Go and find some volunteering work in your area, a hospital or something like that. Get involved in helping your local community and do some good, while at the same time (and this is the clever bit) you're maximising the chances of a relationship popping up out of the blue. But if the main aim isn't to find one, the pressure will be off in the meantime. As long as you're feeling sorry for yourself and not doing anything about it, I doubt that anything'll happen, and those around you may start to find it a bit boring, thus perpetuating the issue. I may not everyone's cup of tea around here, but I think that this is good advice and it comes from a little hidden part of me that still retains some compassion for my fellow man. God knows I've tried to suppress it. TG
