DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?
MAX - Trevor Rabin
"Here you will find no truly honest emotions, just trumped-up movie ones -- Trevor Rabin’s bleating, overbearing score never lets you forget it -- and the saddest part is how the filmmakers assume that the innate love for our furry friends will automatically distract from the fact that it is an unredeeming, routine thriller. There’s just no delicate way to put it: 'Max' is a real dog."
Jason Clark, Entertainment Weekly
"Emotional nuance never has been the forte of director Boaz Yakin ('Remember the Titans') or his co-scripter, Sheldon Lettich ('Rambo III'), but here even the broad-stroke storytelling falls short of its intended impact -- not helped by the desperate bombast of Trevor Rabin’s score."
Sheri Linden, Hollywood Reporter
"First, 'Testament of Youth' is simply very well made. Though the budget's clearly not enormous, the lack of combat scenes feels like a deliberate choice (keeping the focus carefully on Brittain, as is befitting an adaptation of a memoir), rather than a cost cutting measure, and Kent makes up for it elsewhere, including an arresting opening that sees a red-eyed Vera making her way through the raucous Armistice Day crowd. There's an immediacy and sensuality to the way Kent (and excellent DP Rob Hardy) shoot, which makes the film feel closer to Wong Kar-Wai (or at least something like Jane Campion's similarly touch-focused 'Bright Star') than, say, 'Atonement.' Max Richter, who's been doing sterling work on 'The Leftovers' recently, also contributes a score that's stirring without being mushy."
Oliver Lyttleton, The Playlist
"The senseless futility of that first War, often eclipsed in popular culture by the more readily justified WWII, bears repeating. Predictably, perhaps (the movie's producers also brought us the offensively gooey Holocaust drama 'The Boy in the Striped Pajamas'), 'Testament' is sentimental and lumbering, weighed down by a dawdling pace, clumsy flashbacks, drawing-room brocades by the yard, and a score that leans heavily on a soft piano and swelling strings. Blink, and you might miss a much-needed dose of acid from Miranda Richardson as Vera's exasperated tutor at Oxford."
Ella Taylor, NPR
"The actors’ unified commitment to detail and resistance to excess is echoed below the line on this richly crafted film, in which no single expert contribution -- Max Richter’s alternate fragile and soaring orchestral score, Lucia Zucchetti’s unhurried but attentive editing, Consolata Boyle’s simultaneously star-serving and socially perceptive costumes -- is permitted to showboat ahead of another. Hardy’s serene but sharply composed lensing isn’t immune to interludes of outright pictorialism, but they’re always at the service of the script’s own emotional surges: As iridescent imagery of wild flora accompanies a recitation of Leighton’s war poem 'Violets From Oversea,' the film successfully draws the tears for which it honestly aims. 'God forbid any of you should be soft,' Brittain sarcastically taunts posturing military menfolk in one scene; Kent, for one, knows the value of delicacy."
Guy Lodge, Variety
"In terms of craftsmanship, 'Testament' is an exemplar of all the best things about British films. Budgeted at $10 million, it looks the bomb, like something that cost a lot more. Consolata Boyle's lavish costume design, period perfect but knitted with nuance that reveals character, is especially deserving of praise, as is Jon Henson's thoughtfully coordinated production design. Max Richter's soundtrack sometimes sounds slightly too similar to his previous film scores elsewhere, but it still has a majestic beauty, with tiny aural echoes of 'War Requiem,' a musical memorial written by another great Britten, Benjamin."
Leslie Felperin, Hollywood Reporter
