Intrada announced three new soundtrack releases this week, all consisting of previously unreleased score tracks from films from three different eras -- a two-disc edition of Dimitri Tiomkin's score for Howard Hawks' beloved 1959 Western RIO BRAVO, starring John Wayne, Dean Martin and Angie Dickinson; the score to Disney's popular '70s sci-fi adventure ESCAPE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN, by Oscar winner Johnny Mandel (The Sandpiper, Being There, Point Blank); and Joel McNeely's score for Disney's animated Peter Pan spinoff TINKER BELL AND THE GREAT FAIRY RESCUE.

DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?

SONG OF THE SEA - Bruno Coulais

"The Celtic traditions that Moore tries to both honor and enliven in 'Song of the Sea' are exciting, but they often feel like negligible grace notes in an otherwise familiar melody. The worst example of this is when three fairies try to explain to Ben what fairies are, and wind up learning more from him then he does from them. While that reversed power dynamic is clever, and unexpected, it doesn't change how dramatically inert the scene is. This is a major problem since the film's connect-the-dots narrative is the context that should make the film's folk songs, and fairy tale characters exciting. Bruno Coulais's score is moving, and Ben's eccentric fairy guides are charming enough. But because Ben never really goes anywhere unexpected, the film's mythical archetypes don't feel deservedly grand."

Simon Abrams, RogerEbert.com

"With its unique concerns, unerring sense of calm balance, and haunting Celtic-referencing score, 'Song' is a worthy entry into the Oscar conversation."

Michael Ordona, San Francisco Chronicle

"Song of the Sea” is differentiated not only by its rich visual design -- grayer and more subdued than 'The Secret of Kells,' yet still a marvel to behold -- but also by its ethereal musical dimension, another collaboration between composer Bruno Coulais and Irish folk band Kila. Their songs and score feature seldom-heard instruments, Gaellic lyrics and verse inspired by no less an Irish figure than William Butler Yeats (specifically 'The Stolen Child,' in which fairies try to lure a child into the waters). One clue to the importance of music here is the fact that although Saoirse doesn’t speak, by playing her shell flute, this curious child participates in an older, proto-linguistic tradition."

Peter Debruge, Variety

"Even if older audiences might find the story somewhat thin, there’s so much to enjoy on a purely audiovisual level that few will complain, with the feather-light score from Bruno Coulais and Irish band Kila, who earlier collaborated on Kells, another major asset."

Boyd van Hoeij, Hollywood Reporter
