Scones always a bit dry, but yum warm with jam n cream. I always find scones are at their best when fresh.keep 'em a day or two and they're shit.

Cutting Soreen was always a nightmare. Getting it so it didn't squish down. This. Had to be careful loaf didn't get crushed and compacted in the shopping trolley.

Thanks to you people we bought some of this from Sainsburys yesterday. The secret to cutting it (and the answer to a surprising number of life's little problems) is serration. When I first glanced at this I thought you said ' segregation ' !

Thanks to you people we bought some of this from Sainsburys yesterday. The secret to cutting it (and the answer to a surprising number of life's little problems) is serration. When I first glanced at this I thought you said ' segregation ' ! What? Oh, bloody autocorrect! (Trying to get me banned, eh? Go and stand over there, with the other scousers!) I didn't think you could tell I was scouse from the way I writt.

Yes a sharp knife helps. God, i remember popping to the kitchen during the 2 ad breaks in The Sweeney and coming back up to my bedroom with 2 buttered slices of soreen. Trouble was, 4 slices was over half a loaf and was noticeable when dad went to get some!! "Whos had all this?" Always a killer for the bill payer when you have a greedy fat hungry kid at home!

Yes serration without pushing the blade down, but letting it cut without any weight is the way! I've made malt loaf myself once, but the result was no better than the branded variety so pointless. But I do love the taste of malt. I can eat it straight out of the jar. Lovely flavour to this sticky treacle like sugar. But they also used to sell jars of it to give to little kids with COD LIVER OIL in, which is absolutely vile, but good for you. Of course the other major product made with malt is our old friend BEER. And that's a discussion on a different thread... https://birminghamhistory.co.uk/forum/index.php?threads/harvo-malt-bread.36357/
