Cutting Soreen was always a nightmare. Getting it so it didn't squish down.

Yah, nachtmare.

I did like it for a change every now and again, with a ton of butter a cup of tea.

Thanks to you people we bought some of this from Sainsburys yesterday. The secret to cutting it (and the answer to a surprising number of life's little problems) is serration.

Yes a sharp knife helps.

God, i remember popping to the kitchen during the 2 ad breaks in The Sweeney and coming back up to my bedroom with 2 buttered slices of soreen. Trouble was, 4 slices was over half a loaf and was noticeable when dad went to get some!! "Whos had all this?"
Always a killer for the bill payer when you have a greedy fat hungry kid at home! wink

You made me think of the abomination that is Alien: Covenant - "I'll do the fingering."

Yes serration without pushing the blade down, but letting it cut without any weight is the way!

I've made malt loaf myself once, but the result was no better than the branded variety so pointless. But I do love the taste of malt. I can eat it straight out of the jar. Lovely flavour to this sticky treacle like sugar. But they also used to sell jars of it to give to little kids with COD LIVER OIL in, which is absolutely vile, but good for you.

Of course the other major product made with malt is our old friend BEER. And that's a discussion on a different thread...
