Any consumers of sprats here at FSM? I became intrigued by them at my local Russian market and finally tried some of the jarred variety. Verdict: Delicious! Apparently consuming just 3.5 ounces of sprats provides 548% of the daily allowance of vitamin B12. The taste reminds me of fish dip.

The only time I've eaten them I'm fairly sure, was on my first visit to Canada in 1973, where she gave us these with home made chips/french fries. Cannot for the life of me if they were battered or in some breadcrumb mix, but they ok.

Rarely have a problem with fish, though I don't eat it nearly enough. Although I had a taste of my own battered cod from what was left today for the old folks at the home I work in. May I say they're always good!

Getting back to meat pies, the Texas way is to eat kolaches, a tradition brought here by Czech immigrants. Kolache is a sweetened yeast roll that's been stuffed with a fruit, cream cheese, sausage, bacon or any filling of your choice. This common staple is a popular choice for breakfast and most donut shops here sell them.

Getting back to sausage rolls (sort of), tonight is currywurst night. We scored a bottle of the German “Hela” ketchup.

Just had a Melton Mowbray pork pie. Delicious. Slightly peppery, yum.

Sometimes you just gotta love phrases like "getting back to pork pies" and "getting back to sausage rolls". Especially in this shitfest known as a pandemic.

Because my locals (pubs) are closed I ain't tasted the best of either for too long. Obviously I will take the earliest opportunity to fix this...

The consolation is I'm still getting my mini-kegs from a wonderful local brewery. Cheers! Oops... wrong thread.

Aren’t you a bit of a chef, Paul? Sausage rolls should be fairly easy to make. Our latest currywurst “experience” will be one we prepare at home, as opposed to going to our local German restaurant as we do seemingly every week.

Gee, I suppose I am. Though I've settled into a rather cosy position in recent years.... Well for one thing I have a wife who is actually not that pastry friendly, lol (taste-wise not allergy). I would indeed be making more pies etc if not for that woman. At least that's my excuse and I'm stuck with , er sticking to it.

Not to mention the fact that puff pastry is quite a 'faff' and when you have an excellent butcher with the goods locally one can get very lazy..

The “home game” version of currywurst, while nice in a pinch, comes nowhere near the transcendent version one might find via street food or in a restaurant. The sauce at the restaurant has more of a spaghetti sauce consistency whereas the home game version is a lot more liquid-like, but once again—nice in a pinch.

I found some mini sausage rolls in the freezer last week, and so cooked in oven and had with chips. Was yum.

We bought a deep fryer last week. Chips were never so good! All those wasted decades baking things I knew tasted better deep fried!

Baking food that should be fried is like listening to Geof Love cover versions of John Barry originals!

Hey, Geoff Love cover versions were almost like deep fried food. Plenty of other feeble "coverists and their orchestras" that were much worse. wink

Brit orchestras doing “crime jazz” have a distracting “stiffness” about them I’ve never been able to ignore, yet at the same time they’re delightful in their own way. Other American FSMers may get the gist of what I mean.

Oil deep fryers are tough to find in Fortress America these days. Everyone has fallen hook, line, and, sinker for those friggin’ air fryers these days! I have zero faith in air fryers to properly make Chicken Kiev, a dish I’ve obsessed over since last having it in that otherwise dreadful year, 1984!
