Paulhickling: Ya gots to shorten that link, old sport; it's stretching the thread like the food we're discussing stretches one's gut! Cheers Jim. All done.

Jim, I remember seeing those Fray Bentos pies advertised on tv as a kid and always wanting to try one. My mother never got one and I was into adulthood when I finally gave them a go. Once. Sorry to say I was quite disappointed. I can understand anyone who grew up with them liking them but I fear I left it too late. Too greasy and heavy for me. So I hope you enjoy them more if you manage to track one down. I do get an urge to get the occasional tinned fish though. Sardines in tomato sauce, salmon even though it's been years since I've used the 'real thing' i.e. fresh, because as I say above I grew up with these things and still enjoy them. Lately got a taste for tinned mackerel in tomato sauce. Also like Spam, cold or fried, and even better for cold eating... Pek, a tinned pork the smell of which seems quite wholesome and appetizing for me.

I cut my finger on a soup can lid and despite it being a small, superficial cut, it hurt like a plane crash and bled like a Golden Age score cue. I make it a point have fresh salmon twice a month, but it hasn't been readily available in recent months. Don't care for sardines or herring, though I can eat the stuff with no problem if cornered.

We have a really large tin of spam( about a foot long) from a Chinese supermarket. It works out cheaper than small tins. It going to be cut into thirds with two put in the freezer. My dad is threatening to do some home made fritters.

Mmm, the worst tin lids HAVE to be the square kind with the key! Man, they are lethal and should carry a health warning. I once got a can of corned beef whilst on holiday in a cottage miles from anywhere (including doctors and hospitals) and thought I was going to die after fighting with one of the damned things. Evil! Yeah, corned beef. Another canned meat I can happily eat. Spam fritters are a gift from God, and we have those larger catering tins of Spam at my workplace. They let me take the occasional slice home I eat it so rarely, but enjoy it when I do. Dipped in batter and deep fried. Or shallow fried 'naked' and served with an English breakfast.. And either way makes a great sandwich!

I'd take my chances with Pa Damian's Spam fritters before I'd order the sausage loaf at the German restaurant I frequent. He's a pretty good cook. For a change he'll whip out his Lecky slicer and slice some really thin,.a joy. It doesn't seem as fattening that way It's gammon tomorrow, another of his specialities.

I find HP sauce a tad harsh for my tastes and always prefer Branston pickle, or a sweeter 'fruity' brown sauce (including the one Branston do without the bits). White bread, including bog standard sliced does indeed still have certain fillings that it's best suited for, despite my wife's campaign to get me to eat the wholemeal crusty seed filled stuff she likes. Bacon is one these fillings. But yes, pastrami. That never has really taken off here in the UK. Odd, how some things from the US sweep the nation and others don't. I put root beer into that category too. Not even McDonald's could get that into British tastes. They took it off the menu years ago. Shame, 'cause I like it. Oh, nearly forgot. Had me both a Turner's pork pie AND sausage roll on Thursday afternoon in the local. Fresh in they were for their weekly biker's evening. Was going to my daughter's for dinner later and I knew she was only doing (homemade) onion soup, so I wouldn't be too full... Sheer bliss....
