I don't think a mis-printed spine would cause any 'rights issues' John.
My guess is it's maybe more to do with the old Masters Film Music/Robert Townson connection.

I agree, Kev. I just hope they use the opportunity to correct the other error at the same time...

Didn't someone say that there was a printing issue on the spine. Probably the delay is due to that and printing new inlay covers ?

Yes, one of the spines has a printing error. The name "Goldsmith" has been replaced by the name "Lionheart". I emailed Varese about it but didn't get a reply.

Could it be they are correcting it?

Lionheart has written some of my favorite scores, not the least of which is Explorers!

I don't see VS going through the expense and embarrassment of pausing a release over a spine error, considering some of the more egregious typo examples in our collections.

More likely the extra tracks, but I would think that the legalities of those tracks fall under the same contract regardless of their source. Don't studios still own the rights to all aspects their films even if they don't posses the original materials (negatives/music tracks/etc.)? It would be a shame if they were dropped from the program, and a commentary on the ridiculous tangle of copyright law.

EDIT: Oh yes, someone mentioned artwork--artwork permissions are another sticky situation which can hold up releases for months. One would think the studio would have full control over it but apparently don't. Too many cooks in the kitchen I say.

This is an interesting release given the increase in sales price by $5 for "track research" or whatever and then now the sudden pause on shipments.

Also someone's going to yell at me for asking but what was the reason this was scored in Hungary?

Ah crap. The one time I snooze on a Goldsmith reissue…

The price was $24.95 since it was kinda sorta released last Friday. Lots of 2 CD Club releases are at that price point. And it went to Hungary due to budget constraints, to my knowledge. No yelling smile

They opted to burn down all the remaining copies and - if necessary - their owners, as a more reasonable course of action.

Message from Varese:

"We're very sorry but there appears to be a rights issue with the Lionheart CD at the moment. I will reach out to my team to glean any additional information.

Thank you for your patience and apologies again for the delay."

WHAT?!?! I sure hope this is a mistake; after all the CD is still up for purchase on the website.

Hi Folks,

I've been doing some proofing and production assistance for Varese lately. So, an update—there is no rights issue with this album. However, they do have the below message which they asked me to share.

Lukas

Lionheart Update

As a result of some errors and omissions in the artwork, we have made the decision to reprint the package. Unfortunately this means an unavoidable delay of approximately 6 weeks. Those of you who received a copy will be sent a new one at no additional charge. Customers who placed multi-album orders that included Lionheart will be sent the remainder of their in-stock order in the interim and incur no additional shipping fees. Anyone who placed an order for Lionheart and no longer wishes to wait are free to cancel for a full refund. We sincerely apologize for the error, but look forward to presenting the package in the correct manner.

Wait, Varese totally had it posted for $19.95 for about a day or two before they increased the price.

Delighted to hear about the reprint.

A welcome turnaround for Varese considering previous reluctance to reprint, for example, The Haunting.

Thanks Lukas and Varese for the update! So glad to hear this.

I mean jeeze, if I didn't occasionally browse this message board I'd never have known there was an issue.

So much for notifying your customers who already ordered.

The thing is - I appreciate that Varese is a tiny outfit and that the projects they' take on are huge - with an equally huge financial risk - but there are people here who would provide a quality control service for free.

I know for sure that one of these errors would have been spotted in 10 seconds - because that's how long it took me to spot it!

It took me slightly longer - a whole 20 seconds - to notice that Brad Fiedel did *not* conduct The Serpent and the Rainbow!
