Oh I just remembered another great cue from Angel! In the season 1 episode Parting Gifts (I think it's this episode) there is a montage (with score) where Kate is studying Angels past. Great and powerful score!
Not sure if it's Beck or Kral though. Really wish this was included in the soundtrack.

You really need to rewatch, because Kate wasn't even in "Parting Gifts". The episode you mean is "Somnambulist" which guest starred Jeremy Renner of Marvel fame as a crazy vampire serial killer sired by Angel.

I've just rewatched Buffy the movie for the first time in probably 20 years (my God, what a horrible movie!! lol!) to check out the score. I think there is like 19 minutes of score in total and to me, 90% of it all was quite crap.
Nothing special. Like season 1 standards almost. Much of it was just really looooong notes and such. I dont think there will be too much of movie score in the box set.

I cannot stress enough how little I care about the movie. lol

We can be so lucky that it failed and that Gail Berman convinced Joss to make a series out of it.

It was such a smart decision to make Buffy more of an underdog and give her friends that are also underdogs, the whole popular valley girl thing that he did in the movie made her kind of dumb, unrelatable and unlikeable, even though there was an arc for her to become less than the ditzy superficial cheerleader, but Joss did that arc much better with Cordelia (who was able to give her superficial ditz a lot of heart to boot, even when she was at her bitchiest).

As for the music of the movie, I don't remember it, because it has been YEARS since I watched it, but you have to keep in mind that the movie is from 1992 and horror movie music was kind of different then. Same for season one Buffy - that was how horror film music was at the time. But of course now it seems horribly dated. So, here's kudos to Beck and the composers that came after who succeeded at giving Buffy a score that is rather timeless and still holds up.

Oh you are right! I actually did meant to write Somnambulist! razz
I knew it was one or two episodes after Hero and checked imdb. Wrote down the wrong title! haha!

And yeah, scary/horror movie score from that time is quite awful! lol!
Will be interesting to see which cues from the movie they include for the box set.
At least there wasnt much score in the movie so even if they included the complete score (in which there is NO WAY they would, I think), it wouldn't take up too much space for the tv score. Worst case: 18-19 minutes. AT MOST!
That's all there was wink

I'm rooting for that one cue I REALLY liked though!

I rewatched the movie just for the score too. Indeed, not really interesting but i m quite sure it will sound better on CD. Like season 1, the score is used quite sparsely. But for me season 1 sounds more musical than this, but cheaper at the same time... Idk I guess the first Cd with the movie and season 1 will be quite interesting to hear in fact... I really hope they opted for suites that would really help!

Oh and i have to say that i don't agree some horror movies were really well scored during the beginning of the 90s... It depends on the composer and the budget of the movie...

Not long to go now! I'm crossing my fingers we get the announcement and track listing this week. To tide me over I'm ripping score from 5.1 downloads of the entire series that I found, so that anything I love that gets left off I will at least have in decent enough quality.

I was initially bummed to hear that space would be taken up with the film score because I have never seen the film (heard it was bad) and have no connection to it. That said, I am a big fan of the composer Carter Burwell, and if his score for the film is really so brief, I'm glad it's getting coverage on this set for two reasons:

1. It won't really take up that much space, it sounds like. 20 minutes out of a four disc set is nothing, even assuming they do the complete score. (Caveat: perhaps he wrote and recorded some music that went unused in the film but could make it onto CD?)
2. Since it's so brief it wouldn't really warrant a release on its own, so this is probably the only way it ever could have come out, with music from the more popular series that followed it. So it's a neat inclusion IMO and I'm now really looking forward to hearing it. I'll just hope for an Angel volume and Buffy Volume 2 to follow this, but for now I'm just going to revel in whatever this ends up including. smile

I've done that myself actually! I think I have like 6-7 hours worth of 5.1 rips!
Some of it has SFX all over the place, while some of it actually sounds very good!
These rips has helped me a lot while waiting for this! hehe! big grin

Fingers crossed we might get some news this week! smile

And as for score from the movie and season 1. It would actually be nice if they made a suite from each.
Just as a fun/interesting bonus. I'm sure they wont "waste" too much space on this anyways smile

I went back and watched the Power Play episode of Angel after you guys mentioned that Kral was playing Doyle's theme over the scene when everybody raises their hand and agrees to participate in the final fight against the senior partners. That was such a cool moment and I am stunned that I never noticed that before. Beautifully done. Thanks for drawing my attention to that.

Also, The Final Fight cue by Rob Duncan is a thing of beauty, I was just listening to it on my way home from the gym and it just made me super-happy.

Ah yes, I think that the Power Play scene really is one of the most important moment of the entire show.
It reminds us what this show really was supposed to be about from the beginning. Sort of feels like something comes full circle. Really hope we'll get this score somehow in the future!

I love The Final Fight (long version)! Listen to it all the time.
I remember back in the days when they released the Radio Sunnydale compilations.
I got these CDs before I had watched season 7 but I did of course know that this cue was from the final episode.
And I remember in the liner notes (or whatever it's called) there was note that this cue featured work from the Nerf Herder theme. And I just couldn't understand WHERE in the cue the opening theme was featured. Was it so vague that I couldn't understand which part? Listened to it over and over and thought I heard a note or two from the Nerf Herder theme for each listen. Until one day, Robert Duncan released the Long Version on his web page. THEN I could hear the orchestral version of the Nerf Herder theme! Finally! haha! It's beautiful!

Maybe there was a mistake and they were meant to release the long version on the CDs?

Yeah I just have trouble coming up with track titles but its a lot of fun. I tried years ago with the stereo tracks from the DVDs but that was a no-go. Waited years for 5.1.

Hehe me too with the titles! It can be really hard sometimes!
I wonder if any of my titles will match the titles from the box set big grin

Been waiting for 5.1 episodes for such a long time!

I just had a dream that LLL hinted that season 5 and 6 would not be present on this box set.
Such a random dream, lol!

(I am only writing it down in case I'm a true dreamer. I hope I'm not though! big grin )

You mean, you're like Drusilla, a little bit insane, but you can foretell the future with your unique crazy senses?

Yeah, I can totally see that. razz

But again, when MV first hinted that a set was in the works, he said "all seasons".

Also, you need to clear your head for your dreams. Not even I dream of soundtracks and I am Glory-kind of crazy. Why not dream of a nice apocalypse for a change?

I'm just like Drusilla! Total wack job! big grin
But you are right. I should start dreaming about apocalypses and such. Maybe Buffy would show up instead wink
(as long as I remember to beep her) haha

I see that Adam Fields of Dawson's Creek fame scored "Some Assembly Required" and Richard Band composed some so-called "campaign music" I think for the lead up to the series premiere? I wonder if any of that material will be included?

My guess is that the set will mostly focus on music by the three main composers; Beck, Wanker and Duncan, with a little bit of S1 Murphy. There is just not enough space to include and serve every composer who contributed a little bit for one episode.

Richard Band has already released a CD with campaign music (including Buffy). Anybody who is curious, samples are also included on the official website: https://www.richardbandmusic.com/mc-buffy-promos - I find them to not be particularly memorable, even though they did work for the WB trailers.

I wonder which additional music Beck did for "Some Assembly Required".
My guess would be the nice melody that appears in two of the scenes. One between the two brothers and then for the very last scene with Buffy and Angel at the cemetery. It`s a beautiful theme and I think we can even hear a very small hint of the Buffy/Angel love theme in it.

But I might be overthinking it! hah!

I really do hope Walter Murphy gets a decent amount of cues, I did like his work.

Really? What was your favorite cues?

None of them are memorable to me at all, only the Prophecy Girl one with Nerf Herder piano version.

I really do want to find anything good though...are any of his episodes better than others?
(I really should watch season 1 again, probably 10 years since the last time I rewatched it. Always skip it, lol)

I just like the atmosphere he created. Nothing showy just there I suppose haha

I love season one just about every ep except maybe "How to Kill a Boy on the first date". I have a lot of nostalgia for that season.

I have some vague memories of fun music in the Xander becomes a hyena episode of season one...
