I have no idea what the filmmakers wanted to convey with it, but I found the operatic Goldsmith aria over the main titles - when you see the bomb - terribly inappropriate and over the top. It makes the main titles almost laughable. And the rest of the score - at least IMHO - is pretty much Goldsmith routine all the way.

I dug it, but don't have the film anymore. The planes were A4 Skyhawks (I think.) The only thing is I don't believe those planes would ever carry nukes unless desperation set in. They did convey conventional bombs during the Falklands war. It was Skyhawks that gave 'Bomb Alley' it's name. So I think the hymn was a good idea. The true Angels Of Death.

The Main Title is explained in great detail in the notes by the director. Fascinating read.

I've made an amendment to my text, MV. As usual, typing before thinking. It was not Skyhawks that carried Exocet. It was the Super Etendard.

By the way, it has been disclosed on BBC News today, that a Python snake has swallowed a crocodile WHOLE in a highly publicised story. The monkey doesn't stand a chance! wink

Somewhat ironic considering your chosen moniker 'counterpoint'...no?

For myself this opening is one of the most meaningful and breathtaking examples of that perfect marriage of visuals and music ever created for a film of this genre or perhaps any film. EVER.

I love the Goldsmith's score for "Sum of all Fears". The Main Title is inspired, and the whole score is excellent. I'm not fond of the Soundtrack album because of the inclusion of song and the "pop" version of the Main Title. I hope LaLa eliminates the songs or puts them at the end of the score proper.

Well, continuation of Police Academy series would be nice ;-)
One done, 6 more to go smile

But seriously... there is a ton of great and brand new stuff in No. 2.

But I guess we'll see Mummy sooner than that.

Can't wait to pick this up tonight. I can't believe anyone would want this without If We Could Remember though. Jerry wrote it as part of the film, you can't "eliminate" it from the album! It's great, I think.

I guess the

ORDER “THE SUM OF ALL FEARS: LIMITED EDITION (2-CD SET)

on the email is a misprint?

$10 off Patriot Games is nice though. smile

I don't understand it either. "If We Could Remember" is just as much a part of Goldsmith's score as, say, "It's A Long Road" and "Peace In Our Life" - also "pop" songs, based on his main themes, and given a prominent position on the Rambo albums.

This time it's detached from the final cue. I'm not sure if that's the right approach or not. I like it both ways.

Looking forward to this!

The songs annoyed me when I first spun the score, but over time I actually began to enjoy them and even got used to the cross-fading at the end.

It does seem like The Same Air goes to the end of the orchestral recording and (hopefully) does not crossfade into the song (although the song still follows it on this album so it's possible).

Personally, even if you like the song, I don't know why anyone would prefer to have the score crossfade into it. Who cares of Goldsmith was involved in writing it; it's got a much more obnoxious pop vibe than say It's a Long Road. James Horner was of course very involved in My Heart Will Go On, but I for one am so grateful that the last Titanic score cue doesn't crossfade into it because I never want to hear that Celine Dion again!

Oh, and It's a Long Road doesn't crossfade from a previous score cue so when one wants to just listen to the orchestral score one has that option without a weird cut-off.

My guess would be that there is not a crossfade there - usually if the tracks are combined, LLL makes them one track (just based on my memory of past releases, not any official word on the matter)
