Hi gang,

I may have the opportunity to interview Howard Shore either this week or next mainly about Pieces of a Woman but I can ask him about his previous work as well.

Is there anything any of you would like me to ask him?

Great post! Thanks for asking us.

I would love to know the story behind the last two Hobbit films. Why were they not recorded in England as per the other four scores and why did he relinquish orchestrating duties when it has been common for him to do them and be credited in the main credit for orchestration.

Ask him if he/they will ever release the rejected King Kong.

Perhaps you could inquire about the prospect of having complete releases of The Brood and Scanners.

Thank you.

I, of course, want to ask about rejected scores.
'
1. A few short years ago there was news that his score for "King Kong" might end up getting released. This of course has not happened. What is the current status?

2. There have been a number of films in recent years he was announced for, but in the end was not the final composer. I'm curious to know what happened and if anything was recorded on each project: "The Free State of Jones", "Silence", "", and "Pete's Dragon", "".

And not rejected score related:
3. Has he been approached about the prequel LotR TV series? If not, would he be interested?

Were the Herrmannisms in She-Devil intentional?

It would be great to hear a little bit about his working process! Also would love to know what role he thinks music should (or shouldn't?) play in a film, alongside his thoughts on music (or musique concrete) vs. sound design in the aural landscape of a film

Three concertos and an opera. When will he take the plunge and write a full Symphony?

He was the go-to composer for A-list serial killer thrillers in the 90s - The Silence of the Lambs, Se7en, The Cell.

All three scores are brilliant, but they're VERY different. To what degree did the differences simply come out of the material and/or the vision of the directors, and to what degree were the differences a result of him intentionally mixing things up so he wouldn't repeat himself?

Nice! Looking forward to what he has to say.

I'll echo what others have said about a possible release of the rejected score for King Kong, as well as CD releases of The Brood and Scanners.

The more burning question for me though is when we will see the Complete Recordings for The Hobbit films. My understanding is that Doug Adams is sitting on his material for The Music of The Hobbit Films to coincide with these complete recordings when - if - they are ever released.

I would be interested in hearing his take on why he never scored The Dead Zone.

Just trust your own questions, JJournalist. That's usually the best.

Mark, re The Dead Zone.
It's on record that Dino De Laurentiis wouldn't allow Cronenberg to bring Howard Shore on board to score the film.
As was his policy around that time, DDL preferred to use someone from a rock/band background, hence Michael Kamen was selected.
I imagine Howard Shore would say 'I wasn't allowed to score it'.
It's also on record that Cronenberg was more than happy with the (Sibelius inspired) score Kamen provided for the film.

That's weird. First of all, there isn't really anything "rock" about the DEAD ZONE score. Second, Shore has that kind of background too, with the SNL stuff -- probably, at that time, more high profile than Kamen's.

No, DDL didn't want a rock based score, but he chose composers for his productions who had a rock/band background* which Kamen had from his 70s and 80s songs/arranging/conducting work.
I would say much more so than Howard Shore.

*Flash Gordon/Queen
Ragtime/Randy Newman
The Bounty/Vangelis
Firestarter/TD
Dune/Toto

Hi Kev, I have heard Cronenberg's side of what happened regarding The Dead Zone, but never heard Shores perspective. I would like to know what he thought about Kamen's score and how he would have scored it. Would also like to know on a scale of 1-10 how pissed off he was.

Did he compose the music for the trade show scene in "Videodrome," or was that library music?

When will the "Videodrome" score be reissued?

I honestly doubt Shore would answer those kind of questions truthfully, especially the latter one. Also don't think Shore's approach would be very different from Kamen's.
