Thank you for the responses everyone. I'm interviewing Howard Thursday morning and have only been granted a 25 minute window. I know the talk will mainly be about Pieces of a Woman but I'll try to get a few of these questions in.
1. A few short years ago there was news that his score for "King Kong" might end up getting released. This of course has not happened. What is the current status?
Isn't this a myth? He never recorded a the score for King Kong. They had a falling out early on in production. It's not even clear if he ever wrote a lot of music before he was canned. Maybe he recorded a few cues, certainly not a complete soundtrack. Theres an unmentionable out there which is apparently music from another film.
When I spoke Shore in Rotterdam he made interesting remakes about the relationship with the editor.. 'Film music is a recorded art,' he said, 'so the editor is part of the proces.'
There wasn't time to elaborate, but perhaps you can.
He also focussed on the importance of instrumentation. I spoke with him after a live-to-film performance of Crash, with six electric guitars, six celli and percussion taking the lead. Perhaps that's a topic too!
Enjoy! It's a rare opportunity to talk to such a wise an thoughtful composer. Do't start on Saturday Night Live though, your time may be up after one answer

Sorry if I am late to the party, however if you see this, and you have the opportunity could you please ask Howard about his career post the Lord of the Rings Trilogy? In particular, I would be interested if Howard refused any big blockbusters and why he decided to opt to revert back to scoring smaller scale productions (The Hobbit Trilogy and The Aviator aside). LOTR is on the same level as Maestro Williams original Star Wars trilogy, yet the Maestro and Shore ended up taking different career paths post these films. Thanks!

He recorded about 3/4ths of the score. That was the report even back then and there was video from one of the sessions, too.
You know I have a Rejected Film Scores website, right? Riiiggghhhttt? Don't make me lay down some whacky smacky. ;-)
