I still have my.vhs tape from the original broadcast

Heh, me too.
I'm also glad that the episode is preserved on the original season 3 DVD.

Ironically, it's that same season 3 set that made me stop buying the DVD sets.
In "Homer Defined", Bart originally says "Bad influence, my ass!".
On the DVD he says "Bad influence, my butt!".

I thought censoring the DVD's was retarded, so I bailed.

Tough crowd!

While the script used the three-letter word, the original airing (at the behest of the network) used the four-letter word instead. It only reverted to the scripted version on reruns and syndication - so the DVD version is the version as originally aired!

I have the DVDs and will never have a problem rewatching the Michael Jackson episode, but I'm not sure I'd call that issue censorship, since it's the original artists making the call.

Maybe Canada got a different feed than the USA that night--who knows for sure--but on its first airing, it was "ass", and that's what I have on my home-taped VHS.

And as regards the MJ issue, self-censorship is still censorship. I addressed that earlier.
For years the episode was out there just fine, and they pulled it only fairly recently because of the Neverland movie.
Very lame.

Maybe the difference in countries is it! Canada has historically been less puritanical than the U.S. In the US, the original airing was the tamer version.

Wikipedia sez:

The episode was written by freelance writer Howard Gewirtz. It was one of many stories he pitched to the producers of the show.[4] According to executive producer Al Jean, Gewirtz's script ended up featuring one of the longest first acts (an act being the amount of time between commercial breaks) in the history of the show when the episode was completed.[5] Gewirtz's script originally contained two uses of the word "ass", once from Bart ("bad influence, my ass") and once from Burns ("... kiss my sorry ass goodbye"). This was the first time a character in the show had used this word, and it led to problems with the network censors.[5] Eventually, the censors forced the producers to remove one instance, so Bart's line was changed to "bad influence, my butt".[6] However, in the first rerun of the episode, this decision was reversed, with Bart saying "ass" and Burns saying "butt".[7] (The official DVD release has the dialogue from the original airing.)

I don't know how newsworthy standards-and-practices edits are, since they're done literally all the time on TV shows - but it's pretty interesting that the network would revert one after the first airing. Wonder how often that happens.

But "ass" WAS the original airing.
I taped it that very night.
I have no knowledge, incidentally, of when the switcheroo was made. Once I taped an episode, I rarely watched a rerun (once I could SEE it was going to be a rerun).
So, in true pure-researcher fashion, I cannot confirm or deny events I did not witness. big grin

One of the reasons I remember it so well, apart from the tape itself, was that it gave me one of the best laughs of the episode.
And I recall remarking to the wife something to the effect of, "Boy, is THAT gonna get changed down the road.". LOL

We banned Howard Stern?
I straight-up did not know that.
Hmm. It's not much, but it's a start.
Anyways, I wouldn't call that act puritanical, I'd call it anti-stupidity.

Looks like Song of the South is definitely not going to be added to the service any time soon.

The ironic thing is the WOKE movement believe the 70's, 80's and 90's are outdated and offensive. So why stop with SOTS? I mean they're literately re-imagining everything so it fits their current social sensibilities and killing the past in the process.

And to make matters worse, they’re apparently re-editing movies like The Bears and I, Splash, and the Empire of Dreams documentary on the original Star Wars trilogy.
