Wow, the film went way over your head. It wasn't about anti-violence. (nor pro violence) It wasn't bout that at all. Maybe you need to watch it again? I won't spoil it for you. its a great film on all levels.

...and the sublime - SUBLIME - use of music when at that time I was only really aware of original music being used for films (2001 apart).....

TG, this reminded me that I bought the soundtrack LP around Labor Day '75, with that great Bob Peak cover. Like Onya, I loved the Previn lounge tracks, and ate up the whole album. It was my intro to Shostakovich (I was 14) - was it yours?

Didn't see it in the theaters, and it was a bore on TV with all the commercials, so I didn't last. Also not a sports fan by and large so the premise didn't speak to me. And I think I may have watched the whole thing in the 80's on video, but no clear memories, so maybe not. Which is another way of saying I've never given it a chance.

Hi Sean

I would have been a couple of years older (and presumably still am...)and I went to see it with my older brother. I thought it was a stunning film but it was my brother who bought the LP, and I listened to it on the weekends I went to stay with him. It was indeed my introduction to Shostakovich and it took me no time at all to buy a budget LP of the fifth, followed by borrowing the twelfth from the local library. He continues to stagger me with his humanity as I’ve got older and increasingly understand his less accessible work.

  • I fail to see how "pants" is nearly enough of a significant pejorative in Remakeball's case.

  • You haven’t seen my pants.

I rescind my challenge and will pray for you... and your pants.

Magic, brilliant, sensational classic film! Love it! Acting, story, direction..everything.
The classical pieces were brilliantly spotted, perfectly underlining the mood of the scenes. Albinoni’s Adagio (best recording EVER under Mr Previn) worked so well with the ‘lost love’ subplot.
I still can’t believe how much the remake sucked the big one!

I just listened to the album on YouTube today. Enjoyed it still, but it just made me want to hear the full Shostakovich works it excerpted - sounded odd to me, well, because it's forty plus years later and I know the full works and blah blah blah.

    Still love Previn's party music.
