Well I'm carrying on going out & about, but being careful & sensible. There might not be a vaccine around the corner, we could be living with this thing for decades or longer. I'm not hiding away. The one good thing I've heard is that these virus' tend to mutate to a less deadly form (SARS did), & whereas antibodies might not protect you for ever (cold antibodies don't protect you forever, otherwise once you've caught a cold you'd never catch another, & this is a mutated cold virus), but maybe if you catch it a second or third time, it might not hit you so hard.

For the record, I was a really late in life baby. smile

Nothing wrong with being late. As long as you make up for it when you do arrive.

Skilled nursing in my facility had a huge breakout of Covid cases. But that's a separate building from where I work. Had my third test and it was negative. My ALF remains 100% Covid free. State or Federal Law now requires we be tested every two weeks.

Re Haircuts: I’ve had...ahem...a Flowbee for over 30 years to cut my hair. Still works like a charm so that’s that and that’s how I’ve dealt with that.

Laundry, however, has been a major challenge since I’m not willing to go to the public laundromat on my block, and I can’t afford to have a service do my laundry. So I’ve reduced my wardrobe to things that are basically hand washable. Luckily I don’t have to dress up for work – so jeans and a casual shirt are fine. I’ve become an expert at finding places in my apartment to hang up damp stuff to dry. As for jeans, I did something that worked – took a shower with them on, soaped them up, then rinsed them while still wearing them. Woohoo! Also worked perfectly fine.

NYC is still remarkably showing stasis and low numbers. I am still working on my normal schedule – commuting on the subway 5 days a week. The subways are still basically deserted during rush hour. (Lots of “still”.) This morning there were 5 folks, including me, on the express train in from Brooklyn which is like an episode of “The Twilight Zone.” More people seem to be wearing masks on the subway than before. There are more people “out and about” in my neighborhood. I’ve noticed lots of individuals without masks, but I’d say the majority do wear them even when outdoors. The people who are eating at tables outside of restaurants never have masks on which I guess is a judgment call. Also it'd be hard to eat and drink through a mask. smile

My grocery bill has gone up. Amazon deliveries, never very reliable, have become sort of wonky – orders from UK sellers arriving in 3 days when they've advised on long delays, US earlier than announced deliveries, US later than announced deliveries, and several packages seemingly delivered to a ghost on a Sunday to my office when it was closed, locked, and deserted. Also a refund for an order that I did not complain about and is still showing as enroute with a legit tracking number from Europe.

Family members in Nebraska are doing well. Nebraska, as a State, is also doing quite well. Family members in Alaska also report no major issues other than the general social impact from the crisis. Family members in Louisiana are struggling to find ways to cope with the uptick in cases there. My cousin, an elementary school teacher in Louisiana, is facing major choices about what to do going forward. Another cousin, an MD in Washington State, finished his residency and is about to start with a medical group under much different circumstances than he could ever have imagined.

I haven’t seen my best friends in NYC since March 7th and I miss them! Our regular movie nights are kaput for the foreseeable future.

Wishing all of my fellow FSMers only the very best!

Unfortunately some of the "friends" have been commenting about how wearing masks are useless, the virus is a hoax, how they're partying blah, blah, blah.

At the university here, case #'s zoomed up from 70 to 95 in one week, due to frat parties.

New wrinkle: the grocery store says they need us to use cards to pay, or have exact change, because it's getting hard to get coins.

The "not wasting food" thing has tipped the other way. I've now got too MUCH food in the freezer. I skipped going to the grocery next week. Which will be a relief, in some ways.

I might need greens. So I'll try the local micro-market.

Things I've learned since the pandemic started:

How to unlock and open a door without touching it with my hands (only the key).

How to walk across the bus, keeping my balance by wrapping my elbow around the poles, instead of grabbing with my hands.

How to snip up a t-shirt into 2 masks with tie-ribbons round the back.

That I can spend lots of time with myself and feel okay.

That I don't have to listen to the news both in the morning AND evening. Once a day is quite enough.

Amercans can't follow basic guidlines. What a bunch of children adults are in the US.

Thank you, Solly. It makes me feel better to hear someone else say this.

I went to my local supermarket (Waitrose) yesterday afternoon, & I didn't see one member of staff wearing a mask (it can't be much fun wearing one all day)

I've done a good job on my hair twice now. I think I might keep it up from now on. I can put the money I save towards a cd/dvd. big grin

I LIKE that kind of thinking!

There are many questions regarding what has happened over the last roughly half-year, that remain hanging in the air in the same proportion as SARS-CoV-2 virus particles.

When the pandemic exploded (mid March) locally, within the UK, the appearance of its all enveloping grip was extremely sudden and voluminous. Then lockdown, then now, which to all intent and purposes is where we all are collectively in this indeterminate state of collective wreckage.

One would think the virus would have died out if everyone had played their part during lockdown. Where is the virus that is continually infecting people, therefore, coming from? I don't pretend to have a solid model of what is going on around me because the local reservoir for the virus is us. Trying to gain any kind of spatial resolution as to what exactly is going on is the most frustrating aspect of being embedded within this imported nightmare. For my part, the best I can do is to trust absolutely no one. I can see David's POV all too easily. In this we are agreed.

On the lighter side, someone was inspired by the issues at hand.
