Aren't the "fans" who attend football games nerds, too? The ones who paint themselves on each side with their team's colors?

Maybe it's a stereotype, but I'd have thought that nerds, as a general rule, tend to keep away from "football types" as much as they can - in the same way that, you know, mice try to keep away from cats.

Nice attempt at an analogy there anti, but for me it was more like the way the camp counselers try to keep away from Jason Voorhees.

Actually, I like to keep many different types of people in my vicinity and network, including several "football types" (of course, I'm talking about football in the way that the rest of the world talks about, what Americans refer to as "soccer"). You grow as a humanbeing, I think. I would be very uncomfortable if I just hung out with "nerds" in real life.

No argument there Thor. But the American football (sports) fans talked about above are thorougly disgusting types. See the links to articles I posted above for some descriptions.

In real life, it isn't as extreme as that, of course. Most of my comp sci classmates (insofar that we were the closest thing to "nerds" you could find in school) were pretty well-rounded - I played rugby in junior college; another classmate was the captain of the national youth squash team; and my class, in our senior year, were interclass volleyball champions. Of course, we also played Dungeons and Dragons, and that didn't stop us from getting droolingly orgasmic over the latest computer hardware magazines.

That said, many of the bodybuilders (yes, my school had bodybuilding as a extra-curricular sport) were arts and commerce major students, and none of them fit the "dumb jock" stereotype, either.

That's key to not being a total nerd: moving out, having sex, getting married (sorry, Mr. Jack).

Of course, we also played Dungeons and Dragons..

We use to play D&D at lunch time. I bet they don't let kids/teens do THAT anymore.

It may sound odd, but I do like some sports as well. I love Basketball, and I like playing (not watching) Baseball. I can though, remember some out-of-control fans and jocks. In fact, each Sunday, you should hear the expletives that stream from my neighbors' mouth while watching the Charger game. It's like, "Dude, you need to CALM DOWN!" And I am not exaggerating with how many times the F word gets thrown about. I have no problem with people enjoying their interests/hobbies, but have a little class! And, I'm not saying that I don't have a potty mouth at times, but tis words uttered under my breath or done quietly among those closest to me.

I was surprised nobody has brought up RPGs yet, insofar that roleplaying games have such a high incidence of overlap into nerd culture. I played D&D virtually through my entire education (with the exception of Vampire the Masquerade in the university years.)

That's the key, being a well-rounded person. Probably a lot of people who go to football games are as well-rounded as we are with multiple interests.

The fans in question at major league football games are just drunken football fans, with no other interests in life.

I think in most places these days, drunken and hoon behavior - esp fans who go to matches spoiling for trouble - is no longer tolerated by the authorities.

Back in 2002, I was at a classical concert whose time happened to coincide exactly with a FIFA Soccer World Cup match - Brasil versus China. The first thing everyone asked about when we came out for the intermission was the half-time game score (Brasil leading 3-nil.) We went backstage to say hello to the soloist, and ended up talking about soccer.

If you display the poster in this thread in your home, Sweet Thing will have no problems accepting you as a nerd.

As far as being a member of the nerd hurd is concerned, I paraphrase "Sneakers": "my face is my password".

Proof that you are a total nerd

I clicked on Starship Size Comparison Chart thread.

And liked it.

And scanned over the larger image.

And noted missing things.

Proof of my nerdity from the Starship Size Comparison Chart thread:

"Oh, and the Nostromo is just the tug that pulls the refinery, not the refinery itself."

I glue a pocket protector on myself before I take a shower.

I wear suspenders to hold up my underwear.

I looked up nerd in the dictionary and thought it was my plagiarized biography.
