I found this latest ep just okay. Some filler and some movement. I don't think we will see the death of Negan until the very final episode. There are only two more episodes in the first half which I'm sure will end in a cliffhanger. In the meantime, I hope Rick eliminates the Garbage lady.

Also, remember that Rick did see a helicopter. To me that means that something is going on in other places. Maybe they've found a cure. That all may mean that this will be the last season, and those remaining alive will live happily ever after. smile

Or that Negan will carry out an apocalypse now style helicopter attack, to music, (probably mixed at the Alan Meyerson mixing seminar!). wink

That's the problem with this genre, it wears off quick, millions. I've watched 3 episodes in the entire series, its not a good show. Realistic zombie script, creation, finished with Romero in 85, since then, tripe.

Well, it was my first time clicking on this thread.

Wow. Thor completely dismisses every negative opinion. That's us sorted. Lock the the thread. No other opinions necessary or allowed. Yah it's just not fast paced enough for us. That's the trouble. Wow. Just wow.

I am sorry, but I have to agree with Thor. I think the show is just as good as it always was. Does it have moments that make us roll our eyes with disbelief? Yes, but so do most shows. I just can't get over how everyone keeps bitching about this show, when it is still so entertaining.

Because a series that was a nail-biting seat-leaping rollercoaster ride every week has become a predictable roundabout.
And millions of people deserting the show - not just us lot having a whinefest - should tell them they havent sustained what they managed for several seasons.

Half season finale tonight.

Pretty good, albeit slightly weird finale, pace-wise. They're really stretching out the Negan/Saviour line (is there no end to the misery our heroes I have to go through?), much like the obnoxious boy king in GAME OF THRONES. But there's something to be said about that strategy too; the play with audience expectations, that I can appreciate.

I was not moved by the final twist at all, but that may be because I've always found Carl kinda annoying.

Another drawn out mess. Holes bigger than west ham's defence. Ive never done this before but i actually fast fowarded a few bits.

So saviours - who could have all died if theyd fire bombed the building in the first place - are back wreaking havoc.

Ooh whats that? A tree in the road? Thats mighty peculiar? We are seasoned fighters battling with a cunning enemy, so yes, lets drive all the way up to it and stay in our cars until we are trapped.

A few scenes later saviours " man inside" sees a smoke bomb - hmmm. Thats peculiar. Smart bitch says Stop its a trap but he drives deliberately up to it because he wants to catch them in the trap.

So smart people stop short and dumbos and secret double agents who want to help the scriptwriters drive right up to it even if it has a sign 40 foot high in flashing lights that says Trap!??

This series is really winding me up now.
Its like the team that wrote the previous series went off to do something else and someone said "Shows so popular, the office juniors and interns could finish it off..."

And i bet wanderer found a load more naff bits ?

Joanie even you mustve found that one a bit of a jumble??

I don't understand this criticism. As you said, the saviour was the "inside man", so of course he drove up to the trap knowingly.

Sorry, Bill, but I don't see it as all that "jumbled." They drove into a trap. I would have turned around sooner, but then saviors came up behind them. I just need to watch it again to pick up on the "inside" man and other parts.

I fully expected Negan to be alive and well in this mid season finale. This season is about the power shifts between Rick and Negan.

I figured things would get very bad in this episode before anything gets better. Things were pretty bad. I was touched by the ending. How much more pain can Rick take? Maybe he'll find Carl's note to help him go on. (Or maybe the helicopter people will have a cure for Carl. Doubt it.)

Parts dragged and parts were effective for me.

"...THE WALKING DEAD---the ratings continue to decline. Season 8's midseason finale had 7.9 million viewers, the lowest since Season 2's midseason finale of 6.6 million viewers..."

THE WALKING DEAD---executive producer David Alpert commented on the declining ratings, “I don’t think in any way the brand has lost its relevance in general, I think we’re just seeing a decline in urgency across all media to consume something at a specific time.”

oh so not that the writing has been crap and theyve stretched out the finale and its messy - its down to a " decline in urgency"

Of course, why didnt we think of that.

I keep reading what the producer said, and I still find that his statement doesn't make any sense.

Yup, this whole season seems to be the war with Negan, so you can really skip most of it & just watch the last two episodes.

" THE WALKING DEAD---AMC renewed the series for Season 9 and announced a shakeup. Scott R. Gimple was promoted to Chief Content Officer to oversee the franchise. Co-producer/writer Angela Kang will replace Gimple as showrunner/executive producer. And the office cleaners who were writing the scripts for series 8 at night have been sacked!"

There you are joanie.
It was in the netherworld - outside the final page but not in fsm search.

The sequence with stick man, carole and king was ok, but I thought episode dragged. I even thought they were gona make karls death last all remaining episodes! wink

Ha, ha...you're right. One of the most drawn-out deaths I've seen on film or TV in a long while. Completely robbed me of all of the impact it should have had. But liked all the other elements, including the "false" flashforwards.

Thanks, Bill. All spoilers ahead.

I thought Sunday night’s episode was well done with interesting parallels. I knew the whole episode would drag out Carl’s death, wringing out every possible tear, and that was okay with me. Obviously, the zombie virus took a very long time to take Carl compared to past infected people. Call it dramatic license.

What I liked was the parallel stories of Rick learning lessons from his son about the need to stop being a mass killer. Carl wanted Rick to NOT WIPE out all of the survivors but to imagine a new world that integrated groups together. (Yeah, hated the future scene where Negan was integrated. He just needs to die.) The other story tracked Morgan who has turned (like Rick) into a killing machine with Ezekiel and Carol trying to reason with Morgan. In this story, another kid plays a part like Carl did only this kid kills a survivor which may have awakened some personal insights in Morgan. Perhaps it is children who can teach adults. We saw this in both stories.

I’m grateful that Rick was not forced to kill his own son.

I hope the rest of the season is as good as this episode was. We’ll see.

Well, my reaction was not as positive as Joan's big grin . We keep watching the series because we tell each other "OK, this is going to be a good episode...they'll get back on track this time" , the wife and I want it to be good again. But Sunday's episode - for me - was one of the worst ever.

Yes, worse than when we met the Goth Mopey Hippie Clan last season wink

Please keep your tongue in cheek during the following... razz

It seems the showrunners finally listened to the overwhelmingly negative reaction to how they fumbled Glen's last episode and were determined to not let it happen this time. However they just made it worse by trying to be so sincere and trying so so hard to wring out some tears. It isn't that they drew out Carl's death to a comical length in the end, but every time they cut back to his "really soon we promise he's gonna die" thing, it was for another badly written speech. Another IMPORTANT AND SAD moment. The low point was when Carl and Judith had their heart to heart talk...that toddler has suddenly morphed into a curly haired Shirley Temple clone with angelic lighting. Carl's speech to her...another speech..felt like forever. And is she even old enough to understand what was happening? But as Carl bravely acts , well, brave, the little moppet has turns away as her frightened crying is poorly dubbed in post-production. big grin I'm being a little smartass yeah but that scene was just awkward beginning to end, not just the writing but the direction and editing was slack and the moment when she turns away squealing - it took me completely OUT of the moment. SO Carl is brave and decides to end his own life, we cut to outside...and hear a ridiculously soft "poof" ...I guess he had a silencer..? A loud BANG would have been proper, to drive home what just happened, to drive another nail in. But... "poof" is what we got.

And don't even get started on the ridiculous image of Morgan literally pulling a guy's guts out. It was so crazy over the top...I mean we've just watched him stab a dozen dudes, we get the idea he is no longer a pacifist... but no, we needed the someone's insides literally ripped out of their bodies. There were so many wrong creative choices made in this episode it was heartbreaking. Again a major moment was fumbled by the creative team.

And Carl's Future Happy Vision with Negan and Eugene alive and well and living with Santa Rick felt like it was written specifically to be a WTF moment for the audience, not anything that Carl or anyone from Alexandria would actually wish for. "Ok Pa, I'm a dyin', but let's bring Eugene back even though he betrayed us, oh and you know the dude you've been promising to kill for 2 seasons...but you never use any of the 563 opportunities you've had to do so, that guy who actually turned Glen and Abraham's heads into F*CKING MUSH, yeah that dude...you guys just shake hands and make up. That's my dyin' wish, Pa".

roll eyes
