Zombieland 2

Unlike the first film, this was genuinely funny in places with some funny characters (especially the pink-clad bimbo) and witty dialogue.

Id give it 7.7.

The Bride Of Frankenstein A few decades ago, the consensus was that this was a better film that the original Frankenstein, but I don't think that's the general view anymore. It's a classic film & has some great things in it, but I don't think it's as effective as the first one. The humour is a bit weird (as is Ernest Thesiger), Boris Karloff is great, but his face has filled out a bit & he hasn't got the same haunted & unworldly look, & he doesn't have the same strange stance & walk, & he talks, which takes the strangeness away. It is a classic & has some great things, Waxman's score, & the creation of the bride is one of the all time great sequences of cinema. Son Of next.

The Son Of Frankenstein A really good film, almost a classic, everyone is so good in it. It's Boris Karloff's last outing as the monster, but by now he's just a killer, so I can see why he got bored with the roll. Basil Rathbone is great as Frankenstein's son (with that great voice), & Bela Lugosi is surprisingly good as Ygor. A really great score from Frank Skinner, & the dreamlike & bizarre sets are amazing, especially the Frankenstein castle (& really well lit).

The Ghost of Frankenstein And now the monster is...Lon Chaney Jr. he lumbers around in a very disinterested way (I think Universal only used him so they could have the Lon Chaney name on the film posters). It's all very B picture, gone are the amazing sets, but at only 67 minutes long it doesn't outstay its welcome. I think I'll give it a week or so before I tackle Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman, a film I've never seen.

Billion Dollar Brain (1967) ... 3+/10

There's so much to like in this film that it should deserve a higher rating ... but all the good things are so outweighed by its failings that I struggle to think why I should ignore these so as be more positive.

Michael Caine has lost interest in his character and goes through the motions; only Oscar Homolka appears to be enjoying himself and is a pleasure to watch. My dislike of Ed Begley makes my view of his performance invalid ... he does what's necessary but his character is so detestable that it has no right to be in a spy/cold-war action-drama. Lead actress Françoise Dorléac has no personality and Karl Malden plays ... Karl Malden.

Many of the settings and cinematography are wonderful; the plot is dreadful and it is clear that director Ken Russell is more interested in the former. Even then, so many scenes are faked that we kept asking ourselves whether the main stars were doubled for the location scenes.

I re-read the novel a few years ago but, as with almost all Len Deighton works, forgot the details beyond the main story-line within days (I think he's the only writer for whom I have this problem ... novel after novel) so can't recall if the our anonymous hero stops the mad General before the proposed invasion of if it proceeds, as in the film. Certainly the last act of the film is bad ... no: dreadful, robbing the viewer of any pleasure garnered in the first half (basically prior to Ed Begley appearing).

An interesting, evocative and mostly good/great score by Richard Rodney Bennett which goes OTT a few times but has some brilliant orchestration. I think the music following the General's Call to Arms is taken from Shostakovich's 7th Symphony, though IMDb does not credit this.

A distinct downturn in enjoyment-value after the first two Harry Palmer outings (albeit signifcantly more enjoyable than the two later ill-fated outings).

I thought I'd read up on Françoise Dorléac. Blimey, she died in a driving accident in 1967, aged only 25, her younger sister is Catherine Deneuve.

Presumed Innocent
7.3/10
Solid court drama film. Harrison Ford is very good, with a watchable supporting cast of Bonnie Bedelia, Raul Julia and Paul Winfield.
I liked the ending, too, which I'd totally forgotten. John Williams' score is quietly effective.

Ant man and the Wasp 1-5

Should've been called The Wasp and Stupid White Guy. Anyway I hardly got an hour into this on commercial television. Like the first film, the attempts at comedy fell flat. It was worse in The The Wasp and Stupid White Guy. The attempts at comedy weren't only dreadful it was cringe worthy. The CGI was pretty bad too. Obviously only a partial review as I just couldn't get into it at all.

The informer
2019
Decent thriller where informant for fbi (ex spec forces soldier) goes undercover in polish mafia to save his wife n child, results in him having to serve time to run drugs ring in jail for them/fight for his life etc.

Pretty good n very watchable, espec the prison section.

Murder on the Orient Express (1974)
6/10
Albert Finney plays it like young Mr Creosote. All-star cast. I liked the dark and sometimes dreamlike nature of the score.

In Like Flint (1967) ... 3/10

I'm not sure why I bothered to watch this again after so many years but as I recalled so little of it, I did wonder if I'd given up last time. I felt like doing so time and again but stuck with it if only to avoid seeking to watch it at a later date.

Colourful with a fun Jerry Goldsmith score (not all of which worked for the scenes) but let down by an incomprehensible script, weak direction and a largely unknown cast. It desperately needed a big name to carry the load (Lee J. Cobb's character was far too restricted); James Coburn is perfect for the role but Flint's brilliance needs some counter-balance.

But worst of all, it was far too long and not nearly amusing enough. The non-PC women take control plot-line raised a few smiles (Coburn's/Flint's reaction!) but the rocket / missiles story was a complete mistake.

Best fun was spotting the JB007 links, such as the beach scene - as per #1 Dr. No (1962) - and yet this film was ahead of #5: You Only Live Twice (1967) re: our hero going into space.

Alien - 1979

I had seen it several times of course but this was the first time (last night) i saw it with my 3 older daughters. I envied them getting the chills, jumps and scares for the very first time, not knowing what was going to happen next. Cushions were hidden behind! At times it was more fun watching them react.

They all gave it 8/10 - i'd still give it a 10! Well done Ridders! :-)

THE OUTPOST 8 out of 10

This movie is based on a true story. U.S.A. built an outpost in Afghanistan that was in a deep valley surrounded by high hills. It was easy for Taliban snipers to pick off soldiers. Also, they could gather a full army of Taliban to attack this outpost. It was a stupid place to build this outpost.

My only complaint is that you have to put up with constant shooting, and sometimes it is hard to tell the soldiers apart. On the other hand, Scott Eastwood does a good job of acting. Caleb Landry Jones gives a superb, outstanding performance. Some of the images are indelible.

I can’t say I enjoyed this movie, but I admired it. If you watch it, stay for the end credits.

I quite liked how methodical and low key it was. It's never be made today it's so slow by modern standards. He nearly slips off a roof - today the roof would have to be on fire or he would and he'd have to jump to the next building and he did make it, regardless of distance. And he'd be an Everyman like The Rock.

Tenet
2/10 My score
(2/10) Friend 1 (1/10) Friend 2 (4/10) Overheard Stranger (That much?) Overheard stranger's friend or partner

Not for me, i'm afraid.
The worst aspect was the soundmix, which is the most awful I've heard in any professional film.
Whole swathes of dialogue, often important plot-relevant details, are muddied to incoherence. It rendered most of the plot irrelevant. I had no idea what was going on half the time because i couldn't hear a word of explanation. Though they do have some incredibly painful exposition in it, and a lead character who repeatedly says "I'm the protagonist".

The sound effects are very loud and sharp. It worked right from the off, but then when everything is so high and loud and the dialogue is lost, it just became a constant irritation. I actually had to put earplugs in.

The abrasive and grindy musical score is dialled incredibly high to the detriment of the film.
Sadly, i found the score more irritating than anything. In part it may be the soundmix though.
If you hated Dunkirk, you'll probably despise this. I actually really liked the Dunkirk score and thought it helped build the tension really well. Here the score just made itself constantly known in an unwelcome way.
Some of it sounded like they might be trying to create the sound of time going forwards and in reverse in various ways and i'm sure it was throughly thought out and intelligent, i just didn't enjoy it at all. Neither did my two friends and several others i overheard leaving the pictures.

The film itself is an okay sci-fi idea probably worth 45 minutes of a TV show but not worth 2.5 hours. I think at the start a scientist lady says about the science "Go with it" or words to that effect. And i guess you buy in or you don't.

The acting was odd. Kenneth Brannagh and Anna Debicki are good, John David Washington is a little flat in the lead but likeable. he was better in Blackkkansman. Robert Pattinson hampers himself with a posh English accent which makes him sound like an american failing to do a convincing English accent, and then another English actor, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, does the same but trying a commoners accent and somehow sounds like he's brain-injured. Anyway, the cast is likeable.

There's nothing too memorable in the entire thing, a lot of things happen in reverse and that's about all they're memorable for. Though i do like the way Nolan moves a camera and there appeared to be a lot of actual bullet squibs and real helicopters and jumbo jets and things. Any CGI was used well. He should just make a Bond film that someone else has written and be done with it.

Witness (1985)
7.5/10

Harrison Ford was very good back in the day. This is a decent, if straight forward Thriller. There's a two-line yet-to-be-famous Viggo Mortensen in the famous barn building scene and a couple of other scenes. The synth score doesn't entirely work but does give an odd dreamlike quality at times but doesn't work too well during the final encounter scenes. I do like the orchestral version of the barn raising theme I've heard in places. Kelly McGillis is very good as is the Russian lad from Die Hard.

Xebec, are theaters open where you live? I ask because you saw Tenet. None of our theaters are open in my area at this point.
