I'm listening to MCCARTNEY III right now too. Still hot from the Amazon delivery van. I'm liking it a lot - the promo ads gave the impression it would be all acoustic guitar noodling, but this is strong, meaty stuff - looser and funkier than his hit EGYPT STATION from two years ago.

My little review I wrote for the Steve Hoffman music forum: Place me in the "thumb's-up" group re MCCARTNEY III. The promo ads made me fear it would be a lot of acoustic guitar noodling. Not at all; this is a meaty, tuneful, driving album - looser and funkier than EGYPT STATION. I like ES, but I prefer McCartney's more relaxed and zany albums like III and NEW. "When Winter Comes" is superior, both music and lyrics-wise than "Calico Skies" and "Great Day." [These three tracks were all recorded at the same time in 1992.] I love the image of McCartney's psych war with the "young foxes." "Find My Way" and "Seize the Day" are splendid examples of McCartney adding new musical ideas in the midst of already tuneful tracks. The two "deep" tracks, "Deep Deep Feeling" and "Deep Down" are great soundscapes to luxuriate and meditate in. "Lavatory Lil" is probably the most expendable piece of music here, but it's funny and over with quickly. "Slidin'" is just plain...cool. "The Kiss of Venus" is McCartney at his prettiest. The remaining tracks are all very fine. It's too early to tell how III places for me in the context of Paul's other albums, (I'm still in the pleasant glow of my first listen) but it's a real winner for me.
