I don't know if there ever was a overrated film score but i know top 40 music songs are so overrated, that's for sure, long live classical, Film and broadway music.

Of course there are those that would say that film music in general is overrated!

Too many to name, really, but here are 15 things I can think of on top of my head:

The How to Train Your Dragon scores
Tron: Legacy
La La Land
Jackie
Mad Max: Fury Road
Independence Day
Cutthroat Island
The Godfather
Some John Williams scores
Many Silvestri scores
Many Elfman scores
Many Desplat scores
Many Zimmer scores
Many Horner scores
Many Giacchino scores

But if I had to narrow it down to the three most overrated three things out of these, I would say the following:

Most Giacchino scores
Most Horner scores
Most Zimmer scores

All film music by film composers is overrated. What has music ever contributed to a motion picture? If you need some music in your film, get 50 Cents and Kanye West to provide some cool grooves (and sell some albums!), instead of strange old sounds from strange old people like John Williams and Ennio Morricone. Some of their music is so old, it's not even sampled! It sounds like it's directly made on wood and steel and stuff... not processed, not cool. And they don't even do dance moves, for cryin' out loud!

haha, Social Network was 'hot' (meaning - passionately hated) back in 2011.
Now, completely forgotten score.

Star Wars imo. The main theme was certainly exciting upon first release, but over the years it has gotten abysmally worn out. I nominate Empire Strikes Back as a far more impressive score (the only one I own out of the entire franchise). And I rarely even play THAT one lol! I prefer Alfred, Jerry, and Miklos' action music...among other things.

E.T. The extra-terrestrial , all of of the staff modeled on Howard Hanson's romantic symphony is a bit too much ...

It's all overrated. I don't even know why I'm here roll eyes

I think Zimmer/Batman scores are horribly distracting from the films, mostly because I so wanted the films to have more compelling underscore and all I can think every time I watch them is what a wasted opportunity it was.

+1 for the Social Network too.

God I hate film music.

God I wouldn't want to hear the shit you consider to be underrated or "good", but clearly you have come from the classical elitist crowd anyway given your history here. I'm sure what you consider great I'd find overrated. Meh.

Exactly. Seeing WHO bumped this thread 8 years later was not remotely a surprise.

The Rock

Titanic (and I love Horner, but this is far from his best work)

I agree with those who mentioned The Dark Knight. I’ll add the Star Trek scores, Aliens, Die Hard, Chariots Of Fire.

Overrated composers:

1. Giacchino

Junkie XL
Tyler
Goldenthal
Elfman
Newman
Kamen
Djawadi
Balfe
A lot of Goldsmith

I would also agree with Titanic. I think when soundtracks hit the mainstream and they find there way in everyones record collection, they tend to be judged as a "ultimate" favorite. So Rocky and even some of the Star Wars will be considered overrated when asking film score experts.

A list of composers whom aren't exactly favorites of mine, either. XL is mostly bunk imo, worse thing ever happened to Zimmer.
