Oh, and if you enjoyed "Escape to Victory" (Conti), then you might very well enjoy "Stripes". Sold out VS CD Club though. Some label needs to bring that back out!

I just got STRIPES today and love it!smile

I recommend ZULU DAWN, but be sure to see the actual film to fully appreciate the fine action music.

I'll second the vote for Zulu Dawn. Bernstein at his most ferocious. I have the original Cerberus LP and CD and they both sound great. I think there are only two short cues missing from the album however some of the cues in the film seem to be of a different mix. That said Id love an updated expansion.
This is one helluva score!

Intrada's Amazing Mr. Blunden is now on the Danger Zone list.

It's a great score that will probably become stupid pricey once it's officially OoP.
It's under 200 now so you probably still have a bit of time left, but it really is a beautiful piece of work that you shouldn't miss.

That lazy piano main theme is great, so spot on for Bill Murray.

"And then...depression set in..."

As is the march, also great.

One of his underrated later scores:

TWILIGHT, the Robert Benton/Richard Russo-movie with Paul Newman, Susan Sarandon and Gene Hackman. Lovely main theme, a nice "Chinatown"-like-thriller score.

Anyone have any Bernstein scores they would suggest be avoided?

No, come to think of it, I didn't know a single Elmer Bernstein score that should be avoided.

I like all the stuff recommended here, and obviously there are some real classics.

So I give another recommendation for WALK ON THE WILD SIDE, which is just punchy-jazzy-catwalkingly good.

It's one of my favorite soundtrack LPs to put on display too.

If only he'd done the OTHER Twilight (although he'd scored a movie featuring horror and a romance between a woman and a guy way too old for her before (Saturn 3).

Well, I you like the Bond sound, there is no better Bernstein than the little known GOLD. A kick ass title track. More Bond than Barry. Lush lounge source cues. Majestic travel cues, a few pleasant songs and some very Bernstein action licks.

Perhaps my favorite Bernstein. Perhaps my favorite non-Bond soundtrack.

Had this film been more successful, that score would have a much larger following.

I played Stripes and Spies Like Us to death.

So I've been listening a lot to Roommates and My Left Foot. Both are excellent.

I really wish i had my copy of The Field handy, it's an amazing score.

Henry,

To Kill a Mockingbird is one of the most beautiful scores ever.

The jazzy Man With the Golden Arm and Walk on the Wild Side are essential.

The Magnificent Seven is a very meaty score with several memorable themes.

My piano solo arrangement of "Mockingbird" is included in "The Elmer Bernstein Songbook" published by Hal Leonard.
I was able to work from Bernstein's conductor part I think it's available as a single download.

surface level cheery bouncy Copland imitation stuff that does less for me

Yavar

Et tu, Brute?

In seriousness, I love both kinds of Elmer western scores. Tin Star and Drango are both fantastic! As are Sons of Katie Elder and Comancheros!

You really can't go wrong with just about any Elmer score in that '55-'65 golden age (his golden age, I mean).

And because I'm the only one to mention it so far, here's a bit of "See No Evil":

Thank you for mentioning this, as somehow I had completely missed it on release. Looks like I'll need to pay a premium to get it now but this is my wheelhouse Bernstein and I may do just that.

The Rat Race (1960) is such a catchy score, jazzy Bernstein, & what a classic main title! The kritzerland release is sold out, but I see that SAE have a s/h copy for $17.95. And thinking about jazzy Bernstein (sort of), I'm so glad I bought The Carpetbaggers (1964), what a great release from Intrada, the original score plus the album version, all in great sounding stereo. I was surprised how quickly it went out of print.
