I've never been able to get into some scores Kritzerland released by him, namely DRANGO, FEAR STRIKES OUT & THE TIN STAR. I'm surprised by that, Kev! Those are three of my favorites -- Drango in particular is my #1 favorite Bernstein western score! (I like the darker psychological western scores, and this one since written pre-Magnificent Seven is free of the more surface level cheery bouncy Copland imitation stuff that does less for me.) In fact it's probably my favorite Kritzerland Bernstein too, although the very brief but amazing Hud gives it a run for its money. One of my least favorite Bernsteins was released by Kritzerland too though: Men in War. Yeah that one's dark too but not in a good way. It's dour and I don't care much for the main theme at all (whether sung or not), which just feels like trudging drudgery. (Drago's main theme is just a fantastic earworm, in contrast.) Yavar

Yes, more thumbs up for the Guitar Concerto, which is Top 10 Elmer B for me. And STRIPES, SPIES LIKE US & AMAZING GRACE & CHUCK are ace too. I think we only need about 3 more suggestions and we've got his IMDB page I just ordered SPIES LIKE US! Love that score, especially all the little in jokes from other scores like Lawrence of Arabia and The Magnificent 7. Listening to it right now!

Yavar With you on MEN IN WAR, Yavar... Like a repetitive dirge, with little of melodic interest. Does not make me want to see the film. No one has yet mentioned DEVIL IN A BLUE DRESS! Besides the mainly-songs official "soundtrack" release, there was only an unmentionable with a lot of score cues that were not used in the film, and it is a terrific score! I can't recommend it to Henry, alas, as it does not officially exist. I thought we were going to get this from La-La Land at one point, but apparently the studio stopped playing ball with the boutique soundtrack labels and that was that. (Anybody know more about that?)

Anyone have any Bernstein scores they would suggest be avoided? I read a bunch of reviews for Saturn 3 that said it had a Heavy Metal vibe and was gonna fork over the cash for a reasonably priced copy but after listening to the samples on YT, it didn't do anything for me. I was bummed because I thought for sure that BERNSTEIN IN SPACE was gonna be great.

I've yet to come across a bad Bernstein score, though I've certainly found boring ones or ones I didn't care for.

As usual with recommendation threads, you'll soon have Bernstein's entire filmography listed ,and then you're none the wiser. But compared to the other composers you're regularly exploring, henry, this seems like a fairly insurmountable task (that is, if you're going to complete it!). But between this thread and the many other Bernstein recommendation threads, I'm sure you'll find your way around. ... That's why, when these kinds of threads pop up, I try to confine my selections to things that are still in print and/or relatively easy to acquire at the time. There are some excellent OoP Bernstein collections out there I wouldn't hesitate to recommend (The Ten Commandments is 5/5, and I unapologetically LOVE Saturn 3), but it's more economical to focus on what can be had at retail now, before it goes OoP and the price shoots up and the access goes down. Also, by delaying the acquisition of the OoP stuff, you allow more time for a possible improved or expanded re-issue. Quite frustrating to drop a lot of coin on something rare you had you eye on for a while, only to see it get a reissue in an improved, more economical version a few months or a year later. It may not happen that often, but once or twice can be just enough to stay with you for a while. re: Great Escape- one of the first EB's I bought since I started collecting again. I love the movie, and I love the way the score works in the film, but this is probably the EB score I've listened to the least in all the time I've had. Not sure why that is, just that so much other stuff that I'm less familiar with (as films) strike me as more interesting and rewarding. YMMV- and probably will- but this seems to have become a general rule for me now. It's why I'm more excited to take a chance on the scores to movies I'm less familiar with (assuming I already like the composer or samples).

Oh, and if you enjoyed "Escape to Victory" (Conti), then you might very well enjoy "Stripes". Sold out VS CD Club though. Some label needs to bring that back out!
