Anyone have any Bernstein scores they would suggest be avoided?

I've never been able to get into some scores Kritzerland released by him, namely DRANGO, FEAR STRIKES OUT & THE TIN STAR.
Also, overuse of the Ondes Martenot has turned me off some of his 90s scores.

Yes, more thumbs up for the Guitar Concerto, which is Top 10 Elmer B for me.
And STRIPES, SPIES LIKE US & AMAZING GRACE & CHUCK are ace too.
I think we only need about 3 more suggestions and we've got his IMDB page wink

I just ordered SPIES LIKE US!

I'm surprised by that, Kev! Those are three of my favorites -- Drango in particular is my #1 favorite Bernstein western score! (I like the darker psychological western scores, and this one since written pre-Magnificent Seven is free of the more surface level cheery bouncy Copland imitation stuff that does less for me.) In fact it's probably my favorite Kritzerland Bernstein too, although the very brief but amazing Hud gives it a run for its money.

One of my least favorite Bernsteins was released by Kritzerland too though: Men in War. Yeah that one's dark too but not in a good way. It's dour and I don't care much for the main theme at all (whether sung or not), which just feels like trudging drudgery. (Drago's main theme is just a fantastic earworm, in contrast.)

Love that score, especially all the little in jokes from other scores like Lawrence of Arabia and The Magnificent 7.

Listening to it right now!

With you on MEN IN WAR, Yavar... Like a repetitive dirge, with little of melodic interest. Does not make me want to see the film.

No one has yet mentioned DEVIL IN A BLUE DRESS! Besides the mainly-songs official "soundtrack" release, there was only an unmentionable with a lot of score cues that were not used in the film, and it is a terrific score! I can't recommend it to Henry, alas, as it does not officially exist. I thought we were going to get this from La-La Land at one point, but apparently the studio stopped playing ball with the boutique soundtrack labels and that was that. (Anybody know more about that?)

I've read that the Twilight Time blu-ray of "Devil in a Blue Dress" includes an isolated score, and I'm assuming - like the Twilight Time blu-ray of Jerry Goldsmith's "The Other" - that the track puts the unused material back into the film. Can anybody confirm this? If so, then we have a legit release of Bernstein's complete score, albeit on the blu-ray. I agree that what little was left in the film is excellent:

Another one nobody has mentioned yet is "Hoodlum," which is gorgeous:

I read a bunch of reviews for Saturn 3 that said it had a Heavy Metal vibe and was gonna fork over the cash for a reasonably priced copy but after listening to the samples on YT, it didn't do anything for me. I was bummed because I thought for sure that BERNSTEIN IN SPACE was gonna be great.

I've yet to come across a bad Bernstein score, though I've certainly found boring ones or ones I didn't care for.

For me "Saturn 3" is one of his best mostly because what later became "Taarna's Theme" (his greatest theme IMO) is present and the variations of it here are exquisite (and different from "Heavy Metal" - as an aside, this theme was to underscore most scenes featuring Farrah Fawcett in "Saturn 3," so in a sense it was "Farrah's Theme" before it was Taarna's). Barely any of the "Saturn 3" score made it into the movie, so the music functions far more effectively for me as an unofficial companion to "Heavy Metal."

The Field is my favourite of his. An excellent low-key score. Just not sure where you'd find a copy. I was lucky enough to nab a secondhand copy for 5 Canuckbucks about 20 years ago.

I really enjoy his scores for Stripes, Three Amigos!, and Spies Like Us is particularly good on the album.

Heavy Metal is also fantastic.

Enjoy falling down the Bernstein rabbit-hole, Henry.

Probably the four that I suggested he buy, based on their apparent lack of popularity within this thread.

As usual with recommendation threads, you'll soon have Bernstein's entire filmography listed ,and then you're none the wiser. But compared to the other composers you're regularly exploring, henry, this seems like a fairly insurmountable task (that is, if you're going to complete it!). But between this thread and the many other Bernstein recommendation threads, I'm sure you'll find your way around.
...

That's why, when these kinds of threads pop up, I try to confine my selections to things that are still in print and/or relatively easy to acquire at the time.

There are some excellent OoP Bernstein collections out there I wouldn't hesitate to recommend (The Ten Commandments is 5/5, and I unapologetically LOVE Saturn 3), but it's more economical to focus on what can be had at retail now, before it goes OoP and the price shoots up and the access goes down.

Also, by delaying the acquisition of the OoP stuff, you allow more time for a possible improved or expanded re-issue. Quite frustrating to drop a lot of coin on something rare you had you eye on for a while, only to see it get a reissue in an improved, more economical version a few months or a year later. It may not happen that often, but once or twice can be just enough to stay with you for a while.

re: Great Escape- one of the first EB's I bought since I started collecting again.
I love the movie, and I love the way the score works in the film, but this is probably the EB score I've listened to the least in all the time I've had. Not sure why that is, just that so much other stuff that I'm less familiar with (as films) strike me as more interesting and rewarding.
YMMV- and probably will- but this seems to have become a general rule for me now. It's why I'm more excited to take a chance on the scores to movies I'm less familiar with (assuming I already like the composer or samples).

The Man with the Golden Arm
Sweet Smell of Success
The Silencers
Walk on the Wild Side

I'll second all of these, especially "Walk on the Wild Side" (it would be great if the film tracks for this one would come out).

I just watched The Age of Innocence and liked his score in that. Will have to listen to it away from the film.

I also watched Bringing Out the Dead and his score in that seemed okay too. Had never heard it before, but it seemed worth checking out.

Love "Report too the Commissioner" its funky jazzy colour is sweet also the suspenseful cues are top-draw & the two great vocal tracks are very-nice, not sure if Elmer was part of those tracks but it is a great overall package that never bores my ears!

Ditto "Wild Wild West" - Elmer in his twilight years still had that great western material he never lost that flame just a shame the film lacked the same zest!

"Hud" is really a fabulous film & those orchestrations are powerful cues that sounded much-much more than what he actually used for instruments! The Man!

Oh, and if you enjoyed "Escape to Victory" (Conti), then you might very well enjoy "Stripes". Sold out VS CD Club though. Some label needs to bring that back out!
