The stereo album was rerecorded and rearranged. Like the Mancini lps of the era it contained music not in the film.

And the mono LP on Mainstream was the film tracks?

Nope the film tracks have never been released; your confusion is arising from the fact that Intrada found what they initially thought were the mono album masters but which turned out to be the previously unreleased (and assumed lost) film recording.

Oh, OK, now I see, thanks for clarifying. Sorry to confuse things further.

I have the Mainstream LP and the Sony CD. I'll have to see how much film score there is that is not on the album. And yes, I realize the album is a re-recording.

Although this brings back nice memories of the early 1990s, so I may have to the get the expanded after all.

Listening now, for the first time in ages. This is a very nice album, once you get rid of the march.

If I recall correctly from Geoff Leonard's (et al) Midas Touch book on Barry, the film tracks were recorded in LA and the re-record (album) was done in London.

BTW Onya, what the hell is wrong with the King Rat march?

It is a march. The opening and closing march tracks clash with the vibe of the rest of the record.

Never had this sense - I love that march.

Fair enough.

The subject heading implies that the 3-disc Howard the Duck is also coming out next week. Do we know that for sure? (I'd read the relevant threads but don't remember such specific info).

Yes. They are both coming next week.

I guess that means I'll be placing an order from Intrada on Monday evening (perhaps depending on if I have to go in for jury duty that day).

It is very fortuitous that the actual mono film score recording got shelved with the stereo LP re-recording all this time.
The Intrada hamsters certainly have all their DUCKS & RATS is a row! wink

Imagine how easily the actual film recording could have been overlooked, just because everyone thought it was a mono mix of the album master.

Makes you wonder what else might have been overlooked over the years.

As an aside, there is one instance I can think of where the mono release of a John Barry album included a genuinely different set of takes to the stereo album—FOUR IN THE MORNING.

Are there any other instances of that?

(Besides the US mono LP of Thunderball having a different version of Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.)

Cheers

A recent discovery of the lost stereo material from John Williams' Dracula was greatly overlooked despite the fact they were right under the labels's nose in box marked mono!

There are plenty of instances where a stereo LP had a different take of a track.

This is Onya 'John Williams sucks after 1974' Birri you're responding to.

I quite enjoy "Catch Me If You Can," which I believe dates from 1975. I spin it probably once a year.

I also like "The Accidental Tourist," from 1976.

And isn't "Jaws" from 1975? That gets one spin every summer.

Incidentally,
A similar discovery of a film score recording
accidentally stored together with the re-recorded album master was
HOW TO MURDER YOUR WIFE by Neal Hefti

Bruce Kimmel looked to reissuing that score shortly after the FSM TREASURY COLLECTION sold out. When the master tapes were delivered from the “vault”, Bruce received the stereo album master and additional boxes of mono tapes which happily contained the complete mono score recording.

Yeah at this point you’d think labels would just ask for and check any tapes related to a score, in case they may be mislabeled...
