Is it a mini cd, or a full size cd?

It's a full-sized CD.

Unlike that Empire Strikes Back single. I can't believe it's actually shaped like Vader's head...

There's also a Star Wars single shaped like the Millennium Falcon. smile

If you are talking about the Joel G produced single it is full sized but contains only a small amount of content. But what great content.

Is the orchestral extended version on the single, track 3, the same as the extended version on the BEST OF STAR TREK 30th ANNIVESARY?

The track times are the same, so...yes?

Hi guys! I finally received the single, and love it! My favorite is track 3 followed by track 1 and then 2.

Hi guys, I am making up my mind about getting Goldsmith's theme for Voyager.

I wanted some advice if I should get the "single" version, the album with Chattaney score (which looks like features a short version of the theme) or should I expect a release coming soon smile

There is a multi-CD Voyager release in the works from LLL. I have listened to the Chattaway Voyager CD from "Caretaker" (the pilot) for many years now. It has the 1:47 version of Goldsmith's Main Title theme, a 19 second short version, and the 1:20 End Credits arrangement. The CD is one of Chattaway's better ones since he integrates the Goldsmith theme here and there. Of all the modern Trek composers though his scores take the most "ambient wallpaper" approach.

I honestly found it tough to get through the Chattaway disc of the recent Next Generation Volume 2. I would look forward to a Voyager set though just to have more of McCarthy's trek music... he's grown on me a good bit over the years.

It's taken me about twenty years to fully appreciate McCarthy's contribution to Trek. I recognise, now, that he used a lot of light and shade in his scores and his tracks make for interesting listening experiences. I do like Chattaway's war like scores, though. That comes from being a fan of his music for Invasion USA, that I used to have on cassette. (replaced by the CD). Some of that appeared early on in the Caretaker episode of Voyager. After a while though it becomes tiresome (unless listened to whilst playing Star Trek Online).

Hi, I would like to ask the following:

I want to get Jerry Goldsmith's theme for Star Trek Voyager but I can't make up my mind if to get the single with 3 versions of the theme or the album "Best of Star Trek: 30th Anniversary Special" which looks like incorporates the theme as well.
Also it is the option of getting the release with Chattaney first pilot score which appears to include snips of Goldsmith's theme. But I see the version of the theme is shorter in this one.

What would you recommend me?

Thanks in advance people!

I have always been least a fan of Chattaway than any of the other composers, but I too have gained a greater appreciation for his work over the years.

I think my issue with his compositions has been a somewhat simplicity in the orchestration and lack of complexity of layers that is present in McCarthy's work. Especially in his action writing. Harmonies are much less complex, rhythms are much less complex, less quick string and woodwind ostinatos and his sound just lacks a certain oomph most of the time that McCarthy has. This seems to get better with later Voyager and Enterprise. McCarthy's sound just seems more filled in and rounded to me.

The “extended version” of the Goldsmith theme that's on the single and the “30th Anniversary Special” is an edit. The “Caretaker” album has the main and end title variations, as well as a much shorter version of the theme. Chattaway's score also quotes the theme from time to time. I recommend the “30th Anniversary Special” for its other content, however. The suite from the DS9 episode “The Visitor” by Dennis McCarthy is on here (and has some music not included on the DS9 set), which is one of my favorite Star Trek scores.

I prefer the original main title as heard on the Chattaway "Caretaker" score album, because it's as you hear it on the series minus the sound effects, but also because that extended version edit is poorly done. The edit itself is awkward and as heard on the 30th anniversary CD has a minor audio distortion after the edited portion starts. It sounds compressed with some slight clipping as well.

I've also noticed the end synth crescendo is slightly augmented by a horn line in the extended version which isn't as pleasant (to me) as the original version. Plus the recording on the "Caretaker" album of all three versions of the theme is razor sharp and sounds just perfect when played loud on a good stereo system setup.

The short version of the theme on the Caretaker album is a commercial bumper, though the actual bumpers used on the show were shorter and different. All in all, if you want the best versions of the Voyager theme (easily the best part of that whole show), go for the Caretaker album.

Thanks for your advice, I am listening to this

which appears to be the extended version and certainly the edition sounds awkward.

Guess I have to cancel my order with the single...

Yes, that is precisely the extended version we're referring to.

This is the original main title, as you hear on the "Caretaker" album and of course, the television show itself:

What a misfire the single cd release is then!

Very unfortunate they didn't feature the "original" version of the theme! I mean, the edit sounds horrible to my ears.
