Hi Henry. Mine is a full-sized CD.

It's a full-sized CD. Unlike that Empire Strikes Back single. I can't believe it's actually shaped like Vader's head...

Is the orchestral extended version on the single, track 3, the same as the extended version on the BEST OF STAR TREK 30th ANNIVESARY? The track times are the same, so...yes?

I honestly found it tough to get through the Chattaway disc of the recent Next Generation Volume 2. I would look forward to a Voyager set though just to have more of McCarthy's trek music... he's grown on me a good bit over the years. It's taken me about twenty years to fully appreciate McCarthy's contribution to Trek. I recognise, now, that he used a lot of light and shade in his scores and his tracks make for interesting listening experiences. I do like Chattaway's war like scores, though. That comes from being a fan of his music for Invasion USA, that I used to have on cassette. (replaced by the CD). Some of that appeared early on in the Caretaker episode of Voyager. After a while though it becomes tiresome (unless listened to whilst playing Star Trek Online).

I have always been least a fan of Chattaway than any of the other composers, but I too have gained a greater appreciation for his work over the years. I think my issue with his compositions has been a somewhat simplicity in the orchestration and lack of complexity of layers that is present in McCarthy's work. Especially in his action writing. Harmonies are much less complex, rhythms are much less complex, less quick string and woodwind ostinatos and his sound just lacks a certain oomph most of the time that McCarthy has. This seems to get better with later Voyager and Enterprise. McCarthy's sound just seems more filled in and rounded to me.

Hi, I would like to ask the following: I want to get Jerry Goldsmith's theme for Star Trek Voyager but I can't make up my mind if to get the single with 3 versions of the theme or the album "Best of Star Trek: 30th Anniversary Special" which looks like incorporates the theme as well. Also it is the option of getting the release with Chattaway first pilot score which appears to include snips of Goldsmith's theme. But I see the version of the theme is shorter in this one. What would you recommend me? Thanks in advance people! The “extended version” of the Goldsmith theme that's on the single and the “30th Anniversary Special” is an edit. The “Caretaker” album has the main and end title variations, as well as a much shorter version of the theme. Chattaway's score also quotes the theme from time to time. I recommend the “30th Anniversary Special” for its other content, however. The suite from the DS9 episode “The Visitor” by Dennis McCarthy is on here (and has some music not included on the DS9 set), which is one of my favorite Star Trek scores.
