P.S. I WOULD KINDLY ASK THAT YOU DO NOT POST A LOT OF EMBEDDED YOUTUBE VIDEOS HERE, BUT RATHER JUST THE LINK TO THE VIDEO, AS MY COMPUTER ACTS UP WHENEVER THERE'S A YOUTUBE-HEAVY THREAD. THANK YOU.

I used to play a lot of games in the early and mid 90's, in particular, before I moved away from home in 1996. So my experience with computer games pretty much stops there. My favourites were adventure games from Lucasarts, Sierra etc., and the music within them.

What are your favourites from this era?

It's hard to pick, but of all the brilliant Lucasarts ones, I'd have to go with THE DIG, one of my alltime favourite soundtracks, period.

In the Sierra mold, I'd have to go with GABRIEL KNIGHT 2: THE BEAST WITHIN or the gothic darkness of the PHANTASMAGORIA games.

I also like George Oldziey's MIDI sci fi score for WING COMMANDER III, as well as the moody scores by Robyn Miller for the insanely difficult puzzle games MYST and RIVEN.

I was quite active on the European Amiga scene from the late 80's through '95. I have a lot of fond memories from those years. I also composed some music for the demo scene (discmags, intros etc.). My favourite program was ProTracker, but I used midi and sequencers as well; Bars and Pipes in particular.

I frequently play music from some of the classic Amiga games. I literally have 1000s of tracks on my computer. It's difficult to come up with just one favourite, but the first games that come to mind are some of the action/arcade style games made by Psygnosis and other Amiga specialists. The Shadow of the Beast trilogy has incredible music. The first one, with music by David Whittaker and the second, with music by Timothy Brian Wright and Lee Wright, are two favourites. Other highlights from this period include Turrican 1-3 (Chris Hülsbeck), Agony (Various), Unreal (Maniacs of Noise), Pinball Dreams (Olof Gustafsson), Legend of Faerghail (Andreas Starr) and Superfrog (Allister Brimble).

Great topic, Thor.

I never owned an Amiga myself, Bent Erik, but I had friends who did, so I used to play it at their place. However, I must admit that I don't remember much of the music from these games. Also, Amiga seemed to veer off the scene from around 1990 or thereabouts, when PC games took over. I'm surprised it lived as long as 1995.

That clip from SHADOW OF THE BEAST (which I haven't heard about) was very fun. Is it the same Whitaker who did all those Hammer films in the 60's, I wonder?

All the Rareware scores for Nintendo 64 are brilliant : Banjo-Kazooie, Goldeneye, Diddy Kong Racing !!

By a film composer it'd have to be Faltermeyer's Jack Orlando.

There are a ton of really good console game scores out there, particularly the rock group Green Jelly's grunge style score to Spiderman Maximum Carnage on the Super Nintendo, and the surprisingly harder Euro dance music for the Batman and Robin game on the Sega Genesis (I forget the composer's name but he's really talented, in my opinion). Both of those I think you'd dig, Thor, just for being so against type and experimental with pop music.

Ah, thanks for the clarification, Bent.

I remember when Bruce Broughton's HEART OF DARKNESS came out in 1998, one of the first PC games to have a fullbodied, non-sampled orchestral score. Of course, today it's commonplace, but back then it was a big deal. I tried to play the game once, though, and it really sucks. I hate that kind of platform thing in the first place, but this one was just impossibly difficult (plus, it came out really after my interest in PC games had waned).

Thanks for the recs. I wasn't really that much into console games (I was all about PC), but I had a friend who was a Nintendo and Super Nintendo nut, so I played (or watched him play) some games for that console that had some fun music, like STREET FIGHTER 2, CASTLEVANIA, F-ZERO, ZELDA etc.

Hmmm....obviously not finding the main target audience here at FSM for this topic, a bit to my suprise. I'm guessing it falls between "two chairs", as we say over here, i.e. those who are too old to have played much computer games in the 90's, and those who are too young and only started out in the 2000's.

In any case, I wish they would release more of the classic Lucasarts scores as re-conceptualized soundtracks, like with THE DIG and OUTLAWS. The MONKEY ISLAND scores, for example, are really deserving and currently only exist as fragmented PC rips.

Anything by Michael Land and the LucasArts team -- but especially MONKEY ISLAND 2.

Oh, I have lots of favourites! Have been playing games since the early 90's and I'm still playing today wink

From the 90's I would have to pick Jet Force Gemini on the N64. Robin Beanland did the music for Rare in those days, including Goldeneye and Conker's Bad Fur Day (love the songs in that game!). In Jet Force Gemini, I particularly like the music from the level called Rith Essa. I remember I used to load up the level and turn off the sound fx just to listen to the music... Good times!

Well I could go on for a while. On the PC side, noone mentioned the King's Quest games -- 5 and 6 have really good music. 6 was probably the first video game to have its own pop song written for it (and it's a good one). Also, Sim City 2000 had some neat music....

As for console, well I could go on forever with the Japanese stuff. Final Fantasys, Dragon Quests, Actraiser, even the Sonics and Marios have a lot of really fun and catchy music. Street Fighter, Castlevanias, Zelda....and lots more. Japanese only stuff like Romancing Saga, Parodius, etc etc etc...

And that doesn't even get started with the Japanese arrange albums...

This thread is massively devoid of the best scores from the 90s, mainly the scores from Japanese developed games!
Final Fantasy Tactics is one of my all time favorite game scores and happens to be from the late 90s. Hitoshi Sakimoto uses a wonderful set of synthesizers to create a militaristic score.

Chrono Trigger is perhaps the first real game composed by Yasunori Mitsuda (with the help of Nobuo Uematsu) and is one of the few SNES soundtracks I can enjoy still.

Chrono Cross barely makes this list with a Japanese release date in 1999 and a US release in 2000.

There are of course other major Final Fantasy titles released during that same decade that many consider to have amazing soundtracks (Final Fantasy VI-VIII).

Off the top of my head, I'd say quite possibly Streets of Rage 2 (Yuzo Koshiro) for the Sega Genesis. Would love to have the official soundtrack, but apparently it's out of print now and fetching high prices.

A close second would probably be Flashback: The Quest For Identity (Jean Baudlot and Fabrice Visserot), also for the Sega Genesis.

Another stand out was MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries (Jeehun Hwang) for the PC, though my dad played it more than I ever did. But you could actually put the CD-Rom disk in a CD player and listen to the music like a soundtrack.

I also dig Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis and Star Wars: Dark Forces, even though a good deal of the latter is just variations on John Williams' material.

Goldsmithfan, thanks for the recommendations, but if you don't mind, could you please replace the embedded videos with links instead (see first post).

Thank you.

By the way, I do remember that FLASHBACK game!

And FATE OF ATLANTIS is another fav of mine, some great music there.

It makes my computer act up.

Thanks.
