t. ....., I didn't really know the side characters that I was supposed to know. I'm not just talking about names: I'm talking about faces and personalities, and I at the most had a vague idea of who I was supposed to be following. Unfortunately, there were many times characters were shot, and it made no difference to me, because I didn't know if I knew them.

.

Yep!

btw The music reminded me of THIN RED LINE (Mann actually used the John powell cut from the cd) and I have a sense that that's what MM temped the film with.

I know it isn't fair, but I cant help but compare every gangster film to the magnificent ROAD TO PERDITION.
I doubt it will ever be topped.

My take: Mr. Mann is hardly a "master" director, as someone says in a post. Not even in today's pretty poor selection of directors does he rank high. His "direction" here borders on inept

Not having seen this picture in particular, I would like to echo that Mann has always been a spotty director. Remember that horrible horror movie he did after Thief? - but that he's been in a constant decline since Heat. (Collateral was alright but for the actors involved, the concept and the set pieces, the movie didn't have ANY bite to it. Not to say Tom Cruise was bad but picture his character being played by Hugh Jackman or any number of other handsome leading men with big acting chops?)

This remains for me the film of the year. I'm a Mann fan, but I think the work speaks for itself.

Does anyone know if a promo was released of this and whether there is much music missing from the original soundtrack? I read somewhere that there is an hour of Goldenthal's music in the film...

There's a bootleg copy floating around on the web.
