The Supreme Court makes awful rulings of one sort or another from time-to-time. this was one such awful ruling. Quite simply put, either one believes in freedom and liberty and the free market, or espouses it to make themselves feel better, and when talk meets practice, they cave. This is codified tyranny under the guise of protectionism.

The new ruling states that internet retailers can be required to collect sales tax in states where they have no physical presence. This will be a boon for those states but a burden for retailers and consumers. OY! If you can withstand The Winters, move up here to Montana. No sales tax. The labels will still apply tax though, unless you buy the titles through Amazon.

The necessity of taxes is not equal to the force of law upon the free market. These are two different things.

If MT has no state sales tax, which state's sales tax do the labels apply? Oops, I was wrong! I was picturing (in my head), a recent order I placed. What I THOUGHT I was seeing in the columns under my total was not sales tax, but shipping charges. Sorry. So, actually I guess I'm doing pretty well with no sales taxes on my orders. Now...how do I get free shipping if it's NOT through Amazon?

I had briefly ventured back to AB in March, but alas, Canada has enough geologists of its own. Regards, Christian! Summer here in Montana can be very hot, but at least there's no humidity like in New York. But we do get a lot of massive Forrest Fires too. I know you liked Alberta a lot, I really love that Provence and Calgary and Banff as well. No Calgary Stampede for me (again) this July, too expensive. Regards to your leader, Angela; hope she survives all the political (and otherwise), discontent that's occuring in Europe these days. Think you'll go back to Alberta again, only disguised as someone else rather than a Geologist?

Burden? To keep track of 50 state tax rates? That's piffling work for a computer algorithm, isn't it??

Burden? To keep track of 50 state tax rates? That's piffling work for a computer algorithm, isn't it?? It takes a lot of programming, along with regular updates. Forty-five states and the District of Columbia collect statewide sales taxes. Local sales taxes are collected in 38 states. I haven't seen a count as to how many local rates there are. In Colorado alone, there are at least 10. The Colorado state sales tax rate is currently 2.9%. Depending on local municipalities, the total tax rate can be as high as 11.2%. Colorado is a “home rule” state. Local-level tax rates in the state of Colorado are quite complex compared to local-level tax rates in other states. Colorado sales tax can be levied at the city/county/school/transportation and SPD (special purpose district) levels. The combined sales tax rate for Greenfield, WI is 5.6%. This is the total of state, county and city sales tax rates. The Wisconsin state sales tax rate is currently 5%. The Milwaukee County sales tax rate is 0.5%. Greenfield sales tax rate is 0.1%. BOTTOM LINE, if you are a brick and mortar store, you only have to deal with the one rate where you are, which may change at most once a year. If you are someone who sells nationwide over the internet, you may conceivably have to deal with thousands of local rates (depending upon where your customers are), process hundreds of changes per year, file reports in up to 45 states, and remit monies to same. Or pay someone big bucks to provide a program or system to do it all for you.

Justin, I think we're going to see a LOT more awful rulings from SCOTUS.
