It's one of the most recognizable movie openings in the history of history?

Or is there something more than that?

I'm partial to the first three notes, but I can't find a thread for them.

It did occur to me just recently that the opening fanfare before the theme really starts is opening of the Throne Room which is also the end of the end title.

So the score ends where it begins.

(I think I realized this when listening to the end of Rogue One.)

What's this Stair Wares thing again? Can someone remind me. Is it about escalators at Sears?

What would you like to “read” about the Main Star Wars Theme?
It is like me asking someone to talk about The Theme From Superman.
Once people hear something they like, unfortunately it seems that the subject matter ceases.
People only talk when they have something to complain about.
That is life.
My favourite variation on “Luke’s Theme” is probably the last time we hear it in the End Titles.
In regards to the score – I also enjoy hearing it down the Death Star trench – it sounds like a variation on Vader’s Theme (when in fact it is Luke’s Theme!) WOW!
In regards to that contrasting theme, which is also Luke’s Theme, I don’t believe Williams used it anywhere else, except The Throne Room.
There is a nice variation on the contrasting theme in The Empire Strikes Back, in the Ice Planet Hoth cue (not complete, but at least it had been acknowledged).
Three main characters have a contrasting theme: Luke – Indiana Jones – and – Superman – (I must also acknowledge James Bond).
Where are these great themes etc for today's Super Hero Movies?! Other than John Williams Star Wars sequels - It is amazing that I can’t find one that is at least melodious.

Well, "King's Row" and an inversion of "Born Free", right? wink

Of all the SW anthems, the first is definitely the best. The opening blast is quite different to the one for Empire and Return, etc. The original has a most satisfyingly balanced brass fanfare, whereas, Empire offers a much heavier bombardment of the opening salvo - it just goes bang without the subtlety of the original. Basically I just prefer the timbre of the original from the LSO.

Now, if you really want an argument there's the version from the original LP, which continues on with a splice after the star destroyer flies overhead in the movie, and there's the version from the 1st Matessino back in '97, where the music ended with the star destroyer flyover. I think I prefer the longer original version because, in spite of the splice, it's that momentum going back all those years that packed the punch to give that piece of music its longevity.

Edit: there's also tons of potential talk of all the variations from 'take 16' on the '97 album. As I haven't heard them for some time, I'd have to go back and listen to the different constructions to see which were best. They made the right choice with the release version.

I find it rather clumsy myself. I also find JG's STAR TREK Main Theme clumsy in a similar way.

There are some real experts on here - this version, that version, impressive.

I like the blast of the first one, having been in possession of the double LP for a good two or three years before I saw the film, but I think I prefer the Throne Room, with its Elgar/Walton-ish pomp and circumstance prologue. The sort of music that Hans might slow down and slot into a war film score, causing apoplexy left and right.

I'm actually surprised about this, I mean it might be the most iconic theme in movie history...

I like Ben Hur's themes (and score) better. A lot. wink

Always loved the Newman miked original. The theme is totally Korngold influenced. It should have been called the STAR WARS theme, NOT the Luke Skywalker theme. Then it's use when Luke isn't as involved or is totally gone makes sense.

For me the "Star Wars main theme" is the Force theme. Love it and never tire of it, unlike the one (over)used in the main title crawl of each film (which I guess is also called "Luke's theme")...that one I get burnt out on. smile
