Music AND DIALOG? I don't think so!

Boo F'n Hoo. You complain about EVERY SINGLE release...so this is not unexpected.

This is worth it simply for the "New Hampshire Hornpipe" cue. I remember hearing that during one of the boat sequences back when I saw this film a thousand times on cable in the 80's and was disappointed when it wasn't on my cassette of the soundtrack.

EDIT: Now that I look over the track listings of the original LP, I see it was on there. How the HELL did I miss it all these years????????

So, I just might...but wow, just 4 tracks of music out of 11? How much music was in the film, anyway? Much as I love the movie dearly, it's been a long time since I've watched it.

My recollection is that some tracks combine music and dialogue. There are four music-only tracks, but music is in the clear in some others. But you have to snip it out.

This is the way it was done in 1981. No idea if the original tracks exist. No idea if tampering with the LP program was allowed, contractually. I do know that in thirty-five years, no label has issued this on CD. If you love it, it's worth it. If not… well, I guess that's always the case, isn't it?

At least it is clearly stated on the top of the cover art. Some specifics about just how much dialog is part of it would help.

Is this one of the new Club titles? Or just a stand alone release?

Just a stand alone release.

I bought the vinyl of this online the other day but hadn't appreciated it had all the dialogue. As such it really lacks replay value. Shame, cos the music under the admittedly excellent dialogue sounds great. I'd hoped this new release would be music only but alas, no.

What series is this part of - a new Music on Wednesday series (I think that's what it's called on Facebook) - why not just schedule a new release announcement every day of the week? smile

This is part of no series. USUALLY every Wednesday Varese announced an upcoming title. We've been doing this for almost 2 years now, called What's New Wednesday, then changed to NEW MUSIC WEDNESDAYS. For Club and Limited Editions and We Hear You we announce those at different times. This is a straight re-issue of the old MCA album and nothing could be changed so our album cover is identical to the old album. Go to Varese's website and listen to a bunch of audio samples. I believe there are 8 out of the 10 have samples! Glad people are happy with this, been wanting this for decades! smile

Seals the deal for me. Sounds like we have similar take on the presence of dialog on a release. I can't stand it since the whole point of film music on CD is that I can listen to it in the background while doing other things.

Love Dave Grusin scores but I can't deal with the dialogue mixed in. I assume the two couldn't be seperated on specific tracks, but sadly I omit the dialogue tracks from the score only on playlists. I have a few other soundtracks that feature dialogue but I hardly ever return to them. It is a great release otherwise and the cover art is impressive.

I just went through the entire album and the amount of dialogue over Dave Grusin's wonderful music comes out to roughly 3 minutes and 32 seconds of a 41 minute album. Most of the time the music is playing without any dialogue and the bits of dialogue that do come in usually come in towards the final seconds of the instrumental cue. The one cue that has the most dialogue over a score cue is track 3. I myself at home did an edit where I took out the dialogue and the album came to 26 minutes long roughly. Listen to the audio samples and you can here what I'm saying with the dialogue coming in towards the end of cues and such. So happy to finally get the original New Hampshire Hornpipe!

I'm just happy to finally have this out without the clicks and pops smile

And c'mon, people... that's 3 minutes and 32 seconds of a 77 year-old Henry Fonda bitching about old age and death.

I would buy an ENTIRE CD of just that.

This music is exquisite, even if there are only 4 music-only cues. The final 2 tracks segue very touching dialogue into a gorgeous musical finale to the film. (I love the hornpipe and Lake-Song also.) This film was unique in many ways, and I suppose it helps to have seen and love the film to fully appreciate the soundtrack as it is. I'll be buying it, no doubt about it, and will be thrilled to finally have it on CD many years now after my old LP has faded into oblivion. 3 thumbs up!
