Once when I was about 11 or 12, I had some kind of a flu or something, and at one point, I had reached that uncomfortable, queasy juncture where I was not sure if I was going to throw up or not. I tried to sleep it away, but I couldn't get to sleep.

I decided then that I would will myself into feeling better by doing routine things, so I decided to listen to an album.

I put on a Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass LP - it must have been either "Whipped Cream" or "Goin' Places" - and sat down and listened.

At first it sounded good. But because I would frequently play Herb Alpert when we had tacos for dinner on Friday evenings, the music made me think about tacos. And tacos were about the last thing that I wanted to think about on that day.

I won't provide any further details, except to say that I made it to the porcelain altar without staining the shag carpeting.

This may be the only time in my life that music literally made me sick.

Years ago I got The Cult Files Big Box, an early 4-CD pack of Silva Screen re-recordings of film and TV themes. Now, I'd always really disliked Dudley Simpson's zero-budget Stylophone theme for "Blake's 7", and I was intrigued to hear how it would sound in its "recreation". It wasn't any better - and then when that kind of dance floor beat came in!

My brother came to visit a few years ago, and as we usually do, we had a few beers and sat down to listen to some music. At one point I said, "Oh, you must listen to this!", and searched for "Blake's 7", forgetting how funny it actually was. We started crying with laughter, and then when the disco bit started up, we both laughed so much that we spewed out all the beer we'd drunk, with a few bits of earlier-consumed tapas amongst the mess.

Nice story, Graham, albeit with a sticky end.

I proudly played my new "I Film Della Violenza" for a few schoolfriends and during the second track one of them asked for it to be taken off the turntable as the music was making him feel sick. It starts with two choral tracks, which I guess he didn't appreciate. I believe he became a barrister.

I’ve had similar experiences as well, and actually mentioned them in a thread here several years back. What has happened to me is the infamous "earworm effect" in which a song or musical piece plays repeatedly in my head when I’ve had some sort of stomach bug or food poisoning. Thus not only enduring repeated episodes of vomiting, but hearing the same music playing over and over in my head while trying to sleep.
The first time I noticed it was as a child, I got sick once while listening to Ray Ellis’ “The Sheik”. I wouldn’t listen to the song for a while after that, fearing a repeat. It’s happened about a half-dozen times in the 50 + years since and songs such as “I’ve Got The Music In Me”, “Crackerbox Palace”, “Attack On The Helicopter” (Jaws 2), on and on. I’ve noticed that it seems the music is usually at one extreme end or the other of my listening preferences – either one that I really dislike or really like.
Weird.

When I was young, my parents smoked. When we would take long trips in the hot car, for some reason, I could never get them to crack the window with all this smoke in the car. So, I'm sitting in the back seat, choking on all this smoke, it's hot and I'm also a little bit car sick.

Meanwhile, they're playing 8-track tapes of certain music (I won't say what), but --- to this day --- when I hear that music, I feel nauseous all over again because of the association. So, I suppose, technically, it's not the music (I might actually like that music today, if not for this), but the association/conditioning I had against these certain artists/albums. (Once, I was in a restaurant and one of these songs from one of those 8-tracks came on, and I actually had to go outside for some fresh air. Weird.) embarrassment

While the music itself did not make me sick--far from it--you haven't existed until you're burning with fever at 3 a.m. while watching the opening scene of The Wild Bunch with the ants devouring the scorpion with Jerry Fielding's Oscar-nominated score accompanying the proceedings.
