Speaking of Thor--the Gen Y/Millennial one we have here-- he should be predictably thrilled that both this topic AND the most recent alt-Star Trek film have had next to no discussion at the olde FSM Boarde.

Sully - Tom Hanks gets to play the reality based character, while Denzel Washington did the same for his fictional counterpart in Flight, both having been through the 'court of enquiry' scenario in Philadelphia. Interesting that they've both covered similar ground as of late.

Of course, Hanks more recently played the titular Captain Phillips, in which his character is tested to the limit (albeit at sea), so this appearance would seem to be indicative of maybe a minor typecasting for the time being. On the face of it, the course of action Sully took seems correct, hindsight being what it is. Yet, if he had made for Teterboro instead of the Hudson river, what would history say today?

I don't know if 2 roles really indicates typecasting. I find his roles in Bridge of Spies and in A Hologram for the King more similar than in this and Captain Phillips. And of course there's Saving Mr Banks and Cloud Atlas in there too. So I don't think he's too typecast, no.

But the 'captain in peril' themes are similar, don't you think, Mastage? That was the minor aspect of my post - the really important idea is that Sullenberger dismissed Teterboro because he had to reach the runway in a controlled glide, without stalling before getting there. The plane's airspeed would be bleeding away quickly as it lost altitude. The way he undertook things, by using the Hudson as a longer 'runway' over which he was already flying, he could determine when the best time to put down came. Teterboro would have been an incredibly risky alternative. When a plane suddenly reaches a stall, it drops out of the sky like a stone.

Should have called in sick that morning?

That it would have been better to call in sick that morning?

Bloody good job he didn't. Sully's decision making that afternoon was totally succinct. His simple and efficient response when given the choice of a tarmac target was, "unable." I haven't read any of the material regarding this case, however, I'm fairly certain to this day that he knows had he tried to make it to any of the runways at Teterboro, there would have been no more tomorrows either for him, his crew and his passengers no matter how many simulations showed a landing attempt could be done. There's a lot to be said for enlightened judgement.
