Hi Everybody,

About a year ago or so, there was a poll taken as to which of these titles would be devoted to a brand new re-recording from the Tadlow/Prometheus people. I seem to remember "Thriller" (TV) winning the poll by a hair. Has there been any word on that?

I can imagine a glorious new recording of Lionheart with a better performance than the original tracks. The situation was similar to Conan The Destroyer, in which the orchestra was not quite able to play up to par.

James Fitzpatrick, any insight, sir? Thank you!

Either I never saw that poll, or I did and I'm having a senior moment. If I had voted/did vote, my vote would have gone to THRILLER. On the whole, given a choice between a work that at least has been released vs. one that has never been released, I usually prefer the latter. In this case, I also have a strong personal affection for JG's THRILLER scores, because they were the first ones that I ever heard and the ones that led me to fall in love with his music.

Of course, if James ever does do THRILLER, I certainly hope he'll record not only Jerry's scores but also the equally wonderful scores by his friend and sometime collaborator, Morton Stevens.

For those who may not know and there may be some. Until any THRILLER Soundtrack CD's are released, you may enjoy all of Goldsmith's scores Featured on an Isolated Track when viewing the episodes on THE THRILLER COMPLETE DVD COLLECTION. They are truly awesome and I believe all or most of the Morton Stevens scored episodes are Isolated as well. Truly great stuff and DVD Release!

Conversely, for similar but opposite reasons of Preston's, I am unfamiliar with the THRILLER music of Goldsmith's, I however have grown to adore his score for LIONHEART, warts 'n all, with the orchestra he recorded the score with at the time. I think it would be an absolute revelation though if Tadlow & The City of Prague were to be given a chance at a rerecording. At the same time, I'd love to discover "new" Goldsmith with a great rerecording as well....so, I guess it would be a win/win big grin

What can I say?

When you have Jerry doing an omnibus series then you have a brand new score of an entirely different nature every week. On top of that they allowed the composer of the week (Goldsmith more often than not) to do their own end titles. So instead of hearing the same theme every week you heard new ones for each episode. Like having dozens of new mini-film scores you've never heard from Jerry (also some from Morton Stevens and Pete Rugolo).

On top of that this Boris Karloff hosted series was one of my favorites. Mario Bava's BLACK SABBATH emulated it the year after it ended. Great stories, great scores, great series!

If they ever include any scores by Goldsmith's pupil (Goldsmith taught Stevens the mechanics of scoring for film), pupil, occasional collaborator and friend Stevens, I hope they include Stevens' very first score for the series "Waxworks" and "Pigeons From Hell" both of which unfortunately, are not available as isolated scores on Image Entertainment's D.V.D. set of the series.

I created that informal poll. Here's a link. Somewhere on this board I revealed the results; I'll have to find the post.

Dear Filmmusicnow,

You're a man after my own axe-stabbed heart. PIGEONS FROM HELL has been a holy grail for me ever since I was a kid when the show was first broadcast. I can't understand why they didn't isolate the m&e track on the recent DVD set: I've known someone who was able somehow to finagle that feat even before there was such a thing as DVDs. I share your disappointment in this mystifying omission.

I'm not as familiar with WAXWORKS; unlike PIGEONS, I never recorded it on my reel-to-reel Wollensak. But I'm sure it's excellent. All the scores by the two main composers on that series were top of the line.

Save for "Waxworks" and "Pigeons From Hell".

Netiehr. I prefer original recordings, especially ones that still exist.

So then vote for something where the original recordings don't exist any longer. Surely you didn't see their great new recording of The Salamander as a pointless venture?
