KISS THE GIRLS (3-CD SET)
Music Composed by Mark Isham
Unused Score Composed by Carter Burwell
Limited edition of 1000 units

Quartet Records and Paramount Pictures present a mammoth 3-CD set with the world premiere release of the complete original score composed by Mark Isham (A River Runs Through It, Cool World, Point Break, Blade)—plus the unused score composed by Carter Burwell (Miller’s Crossing, Rob Roy, Gods and Monsters, Twilight)—for the 1997 psychological thriller Kiss the Girls, directed by Gary Fleder, starring Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd and Cary Elwes, and based on the best-selling novel by James Patterson.

Mark Isham contributed a striking dramatic work, using a mix of electronics and conventional orchestra—one that underscores the pulsating nature of the story while incorporating a darkly romantic undercurrent. But Isham’s score for Kiss the Girls was not the only music written for the picture. Originally, acclaimed composer Carter Burwell had been signed to score the film, and his fully recorded, unused score makes its debut here.

The complete Mark Isham score appears on Discs One and Two of this release; we have also included the 30-minute suite selected by the composer for the original album released by Milan Records in 1997. The complete Carter Burwell score appears on Disc Three. Both scores are presented in stereo from pristine-condition digital scoring session mixes courtesy Paramount Pictures. The elegant, 24-page full-color booklet includes exclusive liner notes written by Andy Dursin.

Nice work, looking forward to this! Two of my favorite contemporary composers - I've always liked Isham's album as an above average suspenser, have a feeling it will play well with a bit more to it.
And there isn't enough of Burwell's suspense material on disc - should be a fascinating essay too about the two scores.

Thanks Quartet smile

Excellent! Always liked the score in the film, but never ever enjoyed the Milan presentation. The Burwell is a bonus!

Found the Milan disc almost unlistenable.

Sorry.

Two very talented composers whose orchestral chops came out in the 90s. I'm not familiar with this music at all but it's a very intriguing and attractive release. Kudos, Quartet! Cool how you've been championing Isham and I hope you continue to do the same for Burwell...

Wow! I'm a Burwell completist, and I NEVER thought I'd get this score, aside from the samples I think he posted on his website.

So excited to see these forgotten rejected scores being mined from the Paramount vaults (Golden Child, First Love, etc)!

Great to see Burwell finally getting some love from the specialty labels.

With these two great releases by Quarter, the upcoming Club releases and Intrada's batch, this is turning into an expensive month...

Quartet is on a roll. The Amityville Horror just a few weeks ago and now this and Basic Instinct? Amazing.

Fabulous release. Thought I'd better order sooner rather than later with just 1000 to be manufactured.

Anyone have & listen to this set yet? Namely one Deputy Riley, who appreciates this sort of suspenseful scoring & will not just be negative? I'm giving the old Milan one last go, before I buy it this month. It's a decent Isham suspenser, plays fine at 30mins - will 90mins be too much? And what about the Burwell???

Listening to the clips. The Isham cues are okay, but the Burwell cues...very evocative. Shame it was thrown out.

I hope it really is just temporarily out of stock and not actually sold out. Can anyone confirm this? I know I've waited too long on my order, but such is life with low income.

Highly highly doubt it's sold out since nary a soul can even comment a thought on the set! Save SBD, thanks anyway smile

I've got my copy already, but I've still got another four or five new CDs to listen to first, so it'll probably be another day or two before I actually get to play it. I'm especially looking forward to the Burwell disc.

Should I buy it?!

Finally got this in and had my usual quick notes for the gang.
It's a nice presentation but not as in depth as the other 3cd used/rejected set that came to mind in comparison - Poledouris' BREAKDOWN. Dursin's notes are ok, mostly drawn from existing articles, etc. I was hoping for more, but that's my problem.
The music - obviously if you enjoy 90's thriller scores....your ship has come in.
Iaham's set is very good, subdued more than not, until the chase scene-electronic percussion kicks in. It feels like Isham was still feeling his way around the orchestra at this stage. Themes are minimal, but I like Iaham's textures, always have. It's low key stuff, but perhaps due to my enjoyment of Isham's writing, I was never bored, and the 90+mins. went quick.
Burwell's work is excellent, as usual, again subdued, drums for occasional chases. It's more Gothic in tone, like the drollness of The Jackal by way of Fargo. Again, 70mins, I wasn't bored - my own litmus test for albums.

Worth a listen, I love when the used & rejected are allowed to sit side by side!

I just gave Isham's latest score MECHANIC: RESURRECTION and now pine for the days of KISS THE GIRLS and his work in the 90s with orchestrator/conductor Ken Kugler. His stuff now bares none of the trademark sound he used to have and is so generic I couldn't tell you who composed it. Really sad because he had a unique voice.

Back to this release, Quartet does some great releases and it was a big risk to reissue this and with the rejected score. So thankful they took the chance on this.

Agreeden.....unfortunately. At least it's curbed my completist problem....

I still love Isham 's early textural, jazz & thematic writing. I felt his action writing was a bit awkward, but still enjoyable. Fortunately for me then, KISS leans more towards soundscapes, but not even close to today's sound design, the laziest ineffective scoring possible.

Peace, captain! ;-)
