I was traveling last fall when this thread originated, so I missed it. First Breath, if you're still reading, would you mind saying just what it was about the Milan that was so "unlistenable"? The music? The recording? The editing? Other? *** The other day, I broke the seal and opened up my copy -- there was no Disc 1. Now, THAT's unlistenable!

Preston, Preston, Preston...thank you, thank you, thank you etc... Waiting to play Kiss The Girls at some future date. Read this post, opened my disc and guess what??? Disc 3 has numerous lines running across the disc. Placed disc into cd player...and nothing happens...

A few minutes of thematic material and then just drones and ambience for the rest of the score. At least thats how I remember it.

I purchased this set from Quartet sale as well. The 3rd disc has so severe scratch marks just next to the hole of the CD that my computer can't even recognize the whole CD :/ When played on the CD player the first track doesn't play at all and the first few tracks have some skips here and there. The rest of the album plays just fine. So disappointing, I've never had this problem with other CDs I have from Quartet.

I just watched the movie last night on cable, the score was alright but nothing memorable in my opinion. But I am very curious about Burwell's rejection, why was this? I'm sure the Quartet´s release explains that aboundantly, could anybody summarize it?, thanks Couldn't see anything specific but sounds like studio didn't like it. From what I can gather at least.

Yes apparently it was the studio that did not liked the unusual instrumentation (including Balkan flute), that could have felt too exotic/out of place for a film taking place in the US. As the booklet quotes Burwell: "While the film takes place somewhere in the American South, I wanted the location to be more mysterious and unsetting"(...) "I think most of the things I liked about the score were the things that doomed it. While the director always professed enthusiasm for what I wrote, I'm told the first reaction of the studio was 'Where are we? Tibet? Transylvania?'" That's very interesting, thank you, I might look into it Burwell used to have an entry about Kiss the Girls on his website (where the above quote originated from) but he seems to have taken that one off his website. Burwell's score is very interesting though, I enjoy it more than Isham's rather mundane replacement.
