I really like ethereal/ambient electronics layered under orchestral. Synthetic voices. Horner was great at this with apocalyptio, titanic, and the new world. I wish Steve roach or Erik wollo would do a film score. Or at least provide additional music. YOU GOT THAT RIGHT!!! Steve could do some amazing stuff! And Wollo has become one of my new favorites(Silent Currents is a MUST-HAVE!). Also... two bits of trivia.... The scene in TITANIC when Rose is drifting on the headboard and looking at the stars.... that piece of music is from Michael Stearns "concept" album called "Encounters"... they licensed it for use in the film. Also, Stearns WAS the original choice to score THE ABYSS, but the powers-that-be wanted a "name" composer... and that was that!

You've got a standard orchestral score for a movie, what enhancements or embellishments do you like most that are added to it for additional effect? Extended acoustic(!) percussion. Exotic instruments like shakuhachi, zheng, erhu, whatever. NO ELECTRONIC "ENHANCEMENTS" OF ANY KIND. NO CHOIRS - THEY SHOULD BE FORBIDDEN.

While this may not fit "Thing's" definition, I love it when a composer overlays a counterpoint melody... Check out "Whistling Away the Dark" in DARLING LILI, Joan. When Andrews stops singing and the melody repeats instrumentally, there's a wonderful countermelody in the celli that is simply transporting.
