After a stumble or two in my JS listening with Lucona Affair and Witchcraft, neither of which jived with me, it's been business as usual with my next order of play.
This has harkened back to things like King Kong Lives, with added Western Sweep!
I also got a feel of Quigley Down Under by Poledouris in a few cues.
This is Scott doing what he does best. Adding drama, pathos and lushness to the happenings onscreen. He remarks in the notes how he was given ample time and complete freedom to score to his hearts' content.
I'm going to really enjoy getting familiar with this score (and some titles coming up for me include North Star, 20,000 Leagues, 2nd Jungle Book and Shergar - so the future looks bright).
Tell us what YOU think.

I like this one too.My favourite piece is track 6-particularly the brass theme at the beginning.I think it only appears in this track (could be wrong, haven't played it in a while,I might now).

Thanks.

Could anyone please give me their opinions about "Far from Home - The Adventures of Yellow Dog" by John Scott, I'm thinking of buying it ?

Thanks.

It's OUTSTANDING. Amazing main theme that's given numerous rapturous iterations, including a few superb action interpolations. Gorgeous "family" theme that's heard often as well. Great suspense/action cues. Great outdoors pseudo-impressionistic writing. It's everything Scott does well all in one package. Don't hesitate on this one for a moment!
The immense coda that closes the end title is one of my favorite send-offs ever. It's so damn grand!

As for WALKING THUNDER - Yup, not much to add except that it's outstanding. Two great main themes, some awesome individual ideas throughout, amazing playing by the Philharmonia of London (if I recall correctly) and incredibly sumptuous, rich sound quality - all for a direct-to-video kids movie. A-plus material, baby!

Does ANYONE recognize the gorgeous and VERY Scott-like theme heard in the opening twenty and closing twenty seconds of the film's trailer? It's not from Scott's score but boy-oh-boy it sounds like his "voice":

Oh and Kev, you'll love SHERGAR and 20,000 LEAGUES. These are some of his best-orchestrated scores, which is saying a lot since he is, bar none on my opinion, one of THE great symphonic orchestrators, ever.

Funnily enough, Far From Home is the very next disc in my Scott play list order.
I think I will cue it up for tomorrow and let both scores grow on me side by side.
Thanks for the recommends bobb, I knew you wouldn't be far away with the John Scott love smile

Shergar is terrific. The final action cue is IMMENSE.

Yea, that is a great cut indeed. The whole score is full of inspired touches. While I overall think ANTONY & CLEOPATRA is probably Scott's masterwork, he's a composer who, overall, only seemed to get better with age. GREYSTOKE sounds like a creative breakthrough in his mastery of both drama and the orchestra. Compare that to YOR, HUNTER FROM THE FUTURE from the year prior. PEOPLE THAT TIME FORGOT and FINAL COUNTDOWN have fantastic main themes, but don't hold up as well in the action departments - Nowhere near the action music he'd provide for KING KONG LIVES a few years later, for example. Still strong scores, but comparatively thin when compared to his post-1984 efforts.

I think the only working composer who can truly rival Scott's gift is Michiru Oshima, who I regard as the female Miklos Rozsa. No one else comes close, really, especially not anyone working regularly in the Western canon of film music right now.

Walking Thunder is awesome! John Scott is a strange composer for me. He almost never disappoints. I've loved a good 95% of the stuff I heard. So I'm always a little bit surprised when I hear an occasional dud.

"...amazing playing by the Philharmonia of London (if I recall correctly)"

It's the Munich Symphony btw, but I know what you mean! smile

Two short cues I REALLY love are The Bad Bunch and Utah. Just stunning.
The Bad Bunch is every bit as cool as anything Jerry Goldsmith wrote in his pomp.

I shall have to explore the work of John Scott, this is interesting stuff !
I don't have anything by this Great composer at the moment, but I'm currently bidding on "Far From Home"....with a bit of luck I might just win that one.
That's what I find fascinating about film music, you're always discovering different composers and great scores !

Film music is the best !

You're in for a treat, Leo. I too discovered this guy kinda late and was flabbergast by the quality of both his themes and orchestrational finesse. The guy's simply "got It".

Bobbengan,

I get the same "chills" from listening to John Scott's music that I get from the work of Michael J. Lewis.
Another criminally underrated composer !

Ha! No lie, I was going to use him as a reference point for a brilliant composer I only just discovered as well - In his case, something like two months ago. But already I own every note of music available from him. He's a staggeringly powerful composer. Such rich themes!

You should check out Michiru Oshima - She's hands down one of the best best working film composers in my book right now, if not ever. I don't watch/care for "Anime", which makes up a large body of her work, but... My GOD, her music! Just listen for yourself:

(this one sounds as close to Rozsa as anything I've heard in the 21st century!)

I stress that this is only a very, very small sampling of her work out there!

And so it begins. I can barely find some of my favorites from her on Youtube, so be warned this just begins to scratch the surface...

Hilary Hahn did a gorgeous cover of that "Brothers" theme in the second video I posted, by the way, which you can find many places around the web and on iTunes. There's also a video of Hahn interviewing Oshima with the help of a translator somewhere as well.

Like Scott, she often writes in a very sumptuous, Ravel-inspired impressionistic style whilst combining 20th century romantic chromaticism and (being Japanese) hints of Russian vigor and an occasionally Gershwin-like strut. I've noticed this to be a frequent point of reference for Japanese composers.

A few more Oshima gems. The first video is one of my favorite action cues of the 21st century. It's breathlessly exciting and contains that awesome Indiana Jones-esque theme from the other G-zilla cue I posted, taken to dizzying heights this time...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lb2UORwyesM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z6oZ5lS_xGA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wQgCXQyYKPo&list=PLirQ0SDqnN-XrQRz3KKXIVfdpqLleWm9A&index=48

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soLvV-q62nw&index=58&list=PLirQ0SDqnN-XrQRz3KKXIVfdpqLleWm9A (a fantastically operatic action cue this one is!)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WYGxkkkVpMI&list=PLirQ0SDqnN-XrQRz3KKXIVfdpqLleWm9A&index=64 (the theme emerging around the 1:10 mark here is fantastic, and again, very reminiscent of Rozsa).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsnmnPcWleU&list=PLirQ0SDqnN-XrQRz3KKXIVfdpqLleWm9A&index=74

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWrhs-ONSyU&list=PLirQ0SDqnN-XrQRz3KKXIVfdpqLleWm9A&index=82

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fW8ll6ZUD1w

And finally, someone uploaded her ENTIRE score to GODZILLA: TOKYO SOS in one video. This one's a true monster, people - Think John Scott's own KING KONG LIVES in terms of excitement, pomp, performance. For me the theme that emerges around 37:40 and then is revisited often - A kind of strident urgent questing motif for the human characters - Is utterly addictive. But make no mistake, it's all pretty damn fantastic!
