Guardians of the Galaxy:

The biggest mix tape of the year now available on cassette tape! Playing an integral role in the blockbuster film, the songs live on a mix tape in the main character’s Walkman, which was given to him by his late mother. The set’s music is heard throughout the film and the tape itself has a prominent role in the movie’s story.

The Guardians cassette will come with a digital download version of the album and is the first music cassette released by Disney since 2003.

Cassettes have been on the rise the past 5 years.

I can't wait for the return of VHS so we can get rid of these crappy Blu-Rays.

(I'm just kidding, in case any one is in doubt.)

I just got a new boom box for the kitchen, ready for radio, mp3's, CDs, what have you. I listen to Spotify through my iPad on the device.

But lo and behold, it also has a cassette deck.

I think this is adorable, and I may just spring for it!

Say what you will about the junky outdated technology, but who wouldn't want a cool vintage '70's era "2001" inspired 8 track tape player to put on the shelf just for the looks. Some of the plastic cabinet designs with their explosion of Peter Max colors are the stuff of today's junk collectors decorating dreams. At a flea market this thing (working or not) would cost a hipster at least double it's original price from back in the '70's just for the "futuristic" cabinet styling alone. And it would sell. It will sell. It's "art". wink

That looks great, & it's most definitely art. I think that the real art of the past fifty years has been in design. About twenty years ago I threw away a couple of bin bags full of cassettes, & have a large bag of minidiscs awaiting the same fate. Well you can only keep all this stuff for so long, unless you live in a really big house!

I still have two boxes of cassette's stored in the closet. What new movie will make 8-Tracks popular again?

Okay, 8-track is a bridge too far. This is one format that MUST NOT RETURN.

LOL. There was a movie I think in the 90's where a character lived on a boat and still used an 8-track player. Was it Backdraft?

If it is, I've blocked it out of my memory, Solium. I can recall NO instance of an 8-track tape being played in a movie, and if it was, it may be that I have the rare condition of 8-track blindness, where I simply can't see it even if it's on screen.

I don't know why I'm being so nasty about it. I remember getting cheap 8-tracks of soundtracks in the early 80's that introduced me to a lot of scores - Dracula, MacArthur, 1941....

They often broke or sounded slurry after only a few plays. So yeah, they were a pretty terrible platform. The only cool thing about them was you didn't have to get up and flipped them over so you could hear side "B". I think that was their main attraction at the time. BTW, I did a little Google search and it was in Backdraft the guy had a working 8-Track player on his boat!

I said this was next. Now, which will be the first of the soundtrack labels to jump on THIS silly bandwagon? Hint: Not Kritzerland smile

Was that an 8-track player in Men in Black, when Tommy Lee Jones sticks an Elvis tape in his car's player? The scene where he said "No, Elvis is not dead, he just went home!"

I don't think this is anything like the vinyl resurgence. This is a piece of movie memorabilia, like a prop reproduction or an action figure. The cassette plays a big role in the movie, so I expect that people who buy it would be far less likely to listen to it than just have it along with the dancing baby Groot.

Now if only they'd bring back 35mm film for capture so that movies will start looking like movies again instead of likes videos ...

Yes, of course I was joking. I realize it's more of a novelty item.
