Tragic news indeed, but what an influence on our musical present. I couldn't be more impressed with the creative output in his life and he went out on some high notes as I am very fond of TD's music for Grand Theft Auto V and recent albums like Chandra: The Phantom Ferry II.

Godspeed Edgar, thank you for what you have given us!

Very sad news indeed. It was "Charly the Kid" which gave my firstborne daughter her name. RIP.

His name is trending on Twitter UK this morning. Good to know that people are remembering him.

Sad news indeed, during the 80's, Tangerine Dream were my fave band.

RIP Edgar, Thx for some great music.

What happens with TD now?

Froese WAS Tangerine Dream. I doubt the remaining members have the "gall" to continue calling themselves that. Linda Spa is the one who has been with the band the longest (1992), according to Wikipedia.

Btw, here's my obit (in Norwegian):

Nice obit, Thor.

Linda Spa is no longer a part of the band. The most recent formation consisted of Edgar, Thorsten Quaeschning, Ulrich Schnauss and violin player Hoshiko Yamane.

I guess chances are high that this was the end of the band, although we have to wait for an official comment about that.

Yeah, probably. Unless former colleagues Franke, Baumann, Schmoelling etc. are going to come together one more time in a tribute concert or something. We'll see.

I would guess this is the end of TD. Froese had planned for the group to end in 2017 anyway. With him being gone, the other original and later core members gone their ways, I don't see the current remaining members carrying on.

Without Froese really, there is no TD.

No doubt there is at least one final album that could be released, but after that, who knows.

And there is a wealth of archived material, perhaps some of that could be mined down the road.

Yeah, that had indeed been terrific, Thor.

Edgar and Franke didn't really see eye to eye after Franke's departure in 1987, so maybe it's time for a last tribute from CF's side.

Sad news indeed and out of nowhere. I always assumed that Jerome would take over the band when Edgar retired? I would still recognize TD as a band if he took over.

This is a monumental loss. There really aren't adequate words to describe his contribution to music. I find it most sad that he's so little recognized outside these circles. I had the pleasure of meeting him once. RIP sir.

Too bad! I didn't really follow TD after the split-up with Franke and Baumann, but from that early period two of his solo albums in their original form are some of my all time favorites; 'Epsilon in Malaysian Pale' and to a lesser extend 'Macula Transfer' that I took a liking for over time.

In 2012 Epsilon was finally re-released in its original form on a 4CD set by Virgin (Edgar Froese Solo 1974-1983, the Virgin years), although in order to squeeze the music on 4 discs they split up the Epsilon album on two separate discs, but with an alternate version from Solo 1974-1979. I had the LP and the CD version that was hard to come by over the years. For some rights issues it was never re-released until Froese recorded a new version with some added annoying sounds that somewhat ruined the poetic, mysterious and quiet original full of mellotron. My mind used to wander off somewhere into the cosmos while hearing this music. Gorgeous.

Macula Transfer (originally on Brain vinyl) has not officially been released on CD. During 1998 the original recording was licensed by Manikin Records and released as a CD; however, this was done without Froese's consent. It was quickly withdrawn from sale under threat of legal action. This Manikin CD is much sought after by collectors. There are b**ts of the CD circulating with a somewhat lighter picture (blue/white) printed on the CD itself, with more contrast than was on the original Manikin. Again Froese re-worked this album and released it on his own CD-label. "This reworking has enabled Froese to extend the duration of the copyright on the music, and avoid various contract and licensing issues." I never quite understood why this was withheld from release on CD by Froese.

My TD collection is the largest of any artist(s) in my overall CD collection (excluding film composers). I have grooved to their/his mastery for decades. Many of their tunes are deeply burned into my cranial juke box. I literally hear them in my head all the time. This morning as I was lamenting Mr. Froese's passing, I was hearing The Runner, a jaunty little bit from the Tangents box set. Somehow even though music has lost a pioneer and it's a sad loss, the tone of the music that first popped into my head was happy stuff. TD had such range, such deep, raw expressions of rhythmic human emotion through electronic expression...

RIP, Edgar. You were and are a maverick like no other.

Awesome remembrance David! - I also have more TD than I'll possibly live long enough to listen to, especially after a "rampage" this weekend that liberated a local record store of 15 titles. I've been, and am still, playing Froese & TD ALL weekend....I never do that, I can't remember staying with one thing so long. Fun, but bittersweet....

Very sad now. RIP Mr. Froese. You gave me many hours of musical enjoyment. Tangerine Dream, at least to me, represented the pinnacle of electronic film scoring.
