MONDAY, DECEMBER 8

GODZILLA---Toho Studios is developing a new Godzilla movie after the success of the US Legendary Pictures reboot movie, "We have received earnest requests for the revival from fans. We want to begin production as early as next summer." The movie will use CGI which could mean an end to the traditional man-in-suit monster.” Toho's last Godzilla movie was GODZILLA: FINAL WARS in 2004.

STAR TREK---Roberto Orci was removed as director of the sequel by Paramount Pictures for undisclosed reasons. Rumors claim the dispute involved the script co-written by Orci in which the crew of the Enterprise, Vulcans and an alien race compete for a time travel device which could save Vulcan. Edgar Wright (SHAUN OF THE DEAD) was rumored to be a candidate to replace Orci. Trekkies have started a Twitter campaign, #BringinRiker, to get Jonathan Frakes, director/co-star of STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT, to replace Orci.

SAN ANDREAS---photo released from the movie starring Dwayne Johnson and Carla Gugino in which a search-and-rescue pilot and his estranged wife journey to San Francisco in search of their missing daughter after a magnitude nine earthquake strikes California.

THE BABADOOK---director Jennifer Kent commented on a sequel to the well-received Australian horror movie, "Well, the good news is, I had the foresight to make sure that my producer and I owned the rights to any sequels. The reason for that is I will never allow any sequel to be made, because it's not that kind of film. I don't care how much I'm offered, it's just not going to happen."

READY PLAYER ONE---Robert Zemeckis (FORREST GUMP, BACK TO THE FUTURE) is rumored to be the top candidate to direct the movie based on the sci fi novel in which a teenager takes on corporations in a virtual reality after the game's designer dies. Other candidates include Peter Jackson, Christopher Nolan, Edgar Wright and Matthew Vaughn.

THE FLASH---Mark Hamill will reprise his role as The Trickster, the role he played in the original CBS THE FLASH series.

BATMAN v SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE---Jeremy Irons said about his role as Alfred the butler, “He is quite a different Alfred than we have seen so far. Zack Snyder had very clear views about what he wanted. I would just say he’s more hands-on perhaps than just a butler.”

THE SUICIDE SQUAD---John Ostrander, creator of the DC Comics comic book, said he's very happy with Tom Hardy and Jared Leto starring in the movie. He's also happy with the rumored candidates for the role of Amanda Waller: Oprah Winfrey, Queen Latifah and CCH Pounder.

LEFTOVERS---HBO will give the series a "creative reboot" for Season 2 in which most of the supporting roles will be recast and a new setting will be involved.

Star Trek

Losing Orci as the director is the best movie news all year.
He has written some awful scripts, and has no experience as director.
Besides that his attitude really stinks

If this story outline mentioned is true, wow, I hope that stinker idea is dropped too.
Enough with the time travel, enough with Vulcan already.

I am not sure Edgar Wright is the correct choice.
It sounds like Tomorrowland is almost wrapped up.

Bring on the man Brad Bird as Director of Star Trek.

Then what's the point? We have a CGI 'zilla for the U.S. market...the man-in-suit approach is what distinguishes the Japanese films.

I saw the news about Ready Player One the other day. Robert Zemeckis would be not only my top pick of the directors mentioned, but one of the best choices I could think of at all. Of the others, I'm inclined to think Edgar Wright and Peter Jackson would also be good.

I recognize Christopher Nolan as a talented director, but he'd be so terribly wrong for this project.

Absolute agree. A project like this is a big reach for any first time director but if Orci's directing is anything like his "writing" (if indeed you can call his inept scribblings that) the. this would have been doomed. Thank goodness he has been canned by Paramount, now all I need is for him to be booted out of Hollywood completely and I'll be happy.

Agree about the time-travel stuff too. And while we are at it, can we dispense with the "bad-guy out for revenge" plot too?

Absolutely agree re Zemeckis but have to disagree with you about Wright and Jackson, neither of whom I am a fan of.

As for Nolan, I'm still asleep from my experiance of being bored to death by Indulgencestellar so from that alone I'm kind of hoping that the next thing Nolan directs is traffic.

Agreed. It's also an art form all its own like 2D animation, puppets/muppets, stop motion. It's really sad that CGI is killing every other kind of art form.

I'm thinking not just of those respective directors' talents and skills, but also their specific suitability for the material. I've read Ready Player One and loved it, and I think Zemeckis isn't just a strong director who happens to be on the list of people being considered for this, he's quite possibly the single director best-suited to tell this particular story on screen. I know Jackson and Wright both have their detractors here, but I think they're also good fits for this material (in different ways from Zemeckis, of course).

From what I've seen of Nolan's movies he's just tonally completely wrong for it.

Good for Paramount, getting rid of Orci is a step in the right direction. Now if paramount could just get rid of him as a producer as well.

The fact that the daughter is Alexandra Daddario means that when they reunite and become a family again at the end of the movie (oh, like that ain't gonna happen) their neighbours, parents and children alike, will be MASSIVELY tempted to try and peer through their bedroom windows.

I am compelled to agree (Exorcist voice)... time travel is so common here it sounds like Doctor Who, not Star Trek.

(assuming Doctor Who does indeed have a bit to do with time, being a TimeLord and all... you know...)

I believe time travel is a safety crutch for writers who are nervous about daring to establish anything. Pen something people may not like, or something logically inconsistent, and you can always fall back on/rely upon the time travel device to reset things.

So does this mean we have another omni-skilled spec-ops father of Ka-lel? Alfred the British Ninja?

Jeremy Irons is good. I`d hope the project is worthy of him.

Still...I cannot believe Old Spock would sit back and allow Vulcan and Mom to remain dead, knowing about the Guardian Of Forever.

What a horrible idea for a show that was so good and showed so much promise. Oh well....at least it's allowed to continue.

I am guessing here, but I bet your can expect that other foot to fall shortly, if Paramount dumped his story and either 1) he huffed out of directing, or 2) they dumped him for his crappy ideas, then he will not be around to produce either. Further, they hardly need him, there are plenty of other producer teams around that can handle this just fine. Just bring in Brad Bird and let him scrap the entire script and the current writing team and start from scratch, let Brad Bird have carte-blanche at directing the way he wants. His Mission Impossible was the best one in a long time, Incredibles is a classic and Tomorrowland looks terrific.

And by all means, no more recycling story lines or villains from any of the old shows.

I get that you're trying to bait people with this childish snark like you did the Bond crap in the other announcement thread... But for a self-claimed intellectual, you sure do suffer with an acute inability to act like one.

Billion dollars of worth, say what you will, and at one time it was about some pretty good core ideas, which really do not exist in Star Wars - never have

What I read was a little different than how this reads - I don't think anyone is going to be recast. The article I read mentions that season 1 exhausted the original source material, and now they're expanding the story to other towns etc which will add a bunch of new characters and maybe drop some of the more minor characters from S1.

Given the ratings, the fact that HBO gave this another season at all is miraculous IMO. Some behind-the-scenes changes were bound to happen.

Thor did the same thing with the Godzilla discussion. Being passively dismissive, but I don't think he means it in a condescending way. I actually get a giggle out of it, and think it's funny. I like jokey Thor.
