dragon: You can make the link smaller merely by adding the ASIN# at the end of the following (no spaces, however):

www. amzn .com /

So that it looks like this:

JIM PHELPS:

Thanks, but all I do is a quick copy/paste of the link.

Wow, $10 dollars each for the extended films. I thought it was a steal at $40 dollars when I got the set.

Thanks for the heads up! I had a $10 Amazon credit so I picked up a copy for $22 after tax and two-day shipping (Prime member). I've been relatively disappointed in the picture quality of a lot of movies I've upgraded to Blu-ray. Hopefully the LotR extended trilogy is better.

BUTTONS:

The professional reviewers for Bluray.com gave each of the three movies a 4-1/2 star video rating which is very good. Two customer reviewers gave the trilogy a 5 star video rating.

I've only watched "The Fellowship of the Ring" thus far and don't remember any issues with the quality of the video. Though I agree many current and older films looks like crap on BR. It is my understanding Jackson did pull a Lucas and tinted the entire first film so it matched the sequels.

I tried to find legit customer reviews on Amazon before I bought it, but the review system on Amazon can often times be a mess (reviews for the theatrical trilogy and DVD trilogy are bunched with the Blu-ray extended trilogy, etc.). The review on Blu-ray.com is great (love that Web site!) and their picture quality review pushed me over the edge to upgrade. Not as concerned about Jackson messing with the colors being I haven't seen the movies in 10 years so I probably won't remember what they used to look like. big grin Although I can see that being extremely annoying to fans.

Graininess is what concerns me the most on Blu-rays (Ghostbusters 1 and Back to the Future are two that come to mind). I don't understand the tech that is involved into converting these films into modern HD so I'm probably expecting too much movie magic. big grin

That's my biggest issue. Often the prints are not cleaned up. Any dust or dirt is magnified when presented in HD. Much worse situation, for newer films they purposely add grain in order to simulate the graininess of film stock.

I bought the three disc Blu-ray theatrical set for £6 in a shop called Fopp in London, that'll do for me. I wasn't interested in the longer versions, & I prefer the look of the shorter part one, it's not quite as sharp, but the longer version is too green & dark for me.

There are lots of grain lovers online, they think a film doesn't look right unless they see a lot of grain moving about, even though the film is not supposed to look like that, & didn't in the cinema. And in nearly fifty years of working in a film lab & on telecine, sparkle (as we used to call it) was the bane of my life. After all that time of looking out for it, I see every mark now, & it really does show up in HD. A lot of older films really should have a clean-up, a two day de-spot session would work wonders.
