I've been wanting to see this film since I heard Edgar Wright's enthusiasm for it on Trailers From Hell (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVjwlJOI7Kk). I got the Arrow blu-ray a couple of weeks ago and I'm about to start my third viewing. I love, love, LOVE this film.

The Paul Williams songs are fantastic (been listening to "The Hell of It" pretty much constantly since the CD arrived) but I wouldn't mind an expanded version with the short ditty "Never Thought I'd Get to Meet The Devil" and George Tipton's score. The album feels kinda incomplete without the wedding music from the finale.

What are the odds?

Who can say what the odds are?
All I can say is POTP is my favorite movie and I've been dreaming of a complete musical presentation ever since 1974.
As a wee lad of 13 I saw it 38 times in the theater.
The theater would play the audio at gig level. It was amazing.

Absolutely agree with everything here. The time just feels right for this to come out on CD in America (for the first time?) with ALL the songs. "The Hell Of It" was written for a never-shot scene of Beef's funeral, something I didn't know until watching one of what looks like several interviews with Paul Williams on the new BD/DVD set.

William Finley's own version of "Faust" (that he poorly lip-syncs to early in the film) is amazing as well.

Just saw this for the first time last week and was listening to the album today -- it's shockingly meagre, the edition with two bonus tracks is only 35 minutes long. Would definitely buy an expanded release that included all the Paul Williams songs and the fun, silent film-esque, melodramatic score.

Agree with all of the above. Instant buy for me.

Bonus tracks?
What bonus tracks?

'What was that?'

'What was what?'

'You telling me you didn't hear that? Sounded like something trying to get out of its premature grave...and I don't want to be here when it does.'

Ah, seems to be an error on eBay's part. They list one CD release with eight tracks and the newer one with ten, but apparently they all have the ten tracks.

Whew!
What a relief to learn that I have not been missing out.
I confess, when I first read the post my heart began to race a little. LOL

There does seem to be two versions of the album, one where "The Hell of It" fades out at around three minutes and another that continues for another forty five seconds.

When I discovered that, it was after I had ordered it but before it arrived, so it was a tense few days waiting. That extended outro rocks.

I can confirm some of this.
The original vinyl faded the song out by about the 2:59 mark.
The original domestic CD faded it out by the 3:44 mark.
The Japanese mini-LP replica CD fades out identically to the domestic edition.
The Universal "Evergreens" compilation fades it out by the 3:38 mark.
The Raven "Songs For The Family Of Man" compilation fades out identically to the original soundtrack vinyl (which would be the 2:59 mark). However, for some reason the song was mastered to play at a slower speed and suffers from very noticeable pitch variation throughout the song.

I just got finished editing the isolated music/FX track from the blu-ray. Omitting some tracks that were just one extended note or buried under FX, and including a few Paul Williams bits such as "Never Thought I'd Get to Meet The Devil" and various character rehearsals, my edit comes in at 43 minutes.

I'd say there's probably about 30 minutes of score in the whole thing, so both Wiliams' and Tipton's contributions should fit on one CD.

Nice. Bet it sounds awesome.

A couple of years ago I copied the regular stereo audio from the DVD into a wav file using Audacity and edited from there. The difference was that I included every scrap of music, even if it had dialogue over it. I already realized that those one-note bits were more important to me than I would have thought.
Starting it off with the Serling prologue gave me a kick every time.

It's passable until something better comes along, there's still a lot of FX in it.

I'd love to hear a full version on that final cue as Winslow crawls towards Phoenix at the end of the film. Just as it's getting the most operatic, it cuts quite harshly into The Hell of It.

It amazes me that no-one has tackled an expanded version. Perhaps the recordings are lost, or are in poor shape?

"Phantom of the Paradise" continues to build a strong cult audience. It's recent release on Blu-ray, on both sides of the Atlantic, has introduced the film to many new fans.

Yeah, I'm thinking I'm gonna have to re-rip that bit and include Serling's narration.

It's profile has definitely increased in the last year or two. Or maybe I'm just paying more attention now.

I need to re-watch SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD at some point soon, since there's apparently a ton of PHANTOM references in it. Edgar Wright wrote a nice tribute to William Finley on his blog when he died. http://www.edgarwrighthere.com/2012/04/15/winslow-leach-forever/

Ohhh yes, that track alone would be worth rebuying this! I love the film and the soundtrack. I'm glad people are starting to appreciate it more now.

I just watched this film for the first time. I was speechless. I am not sure if it is brilliant, terrible, or both.

You say that like it's a bad thing.
