My order would be 2, 1, 4, 3, 7 pt.2,

5 and 6 I can't remember much about the music.

#1 and #2 are excellent, if a little bland and pain-by-numbers, much like the films. #3 is by far the best, with Williams seemingly re-invigorated by working with a new and very visual director. The creativity pouring out of each track is literally breathtaking. #4 is also very good, just lightly behind Williams' efforts. The other score were ineffective in their films and embarrassingly not worth listening to outside the films.

I'm gonna repeat the same thing I said last year because it seems like some people never change:

I wish people could value the diversity of the franchise instead of whining for continuity (which is hypocrite, because the same people bashed JNH's Catching Fire -and now Mockingjay - for continuing the styles and themes from the first film) given how the films and books itself went maturing and getting darker over the years (which it's even proved on the last film for how inadequate were the tracked cues from COS as where Dumbledore's Farewell from HP6 was more properly used).

The thread is more like Favourite Harry Potter score from 1-4, than favourite Harry Potter score of the franchise as a whole.

1. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (milestone)
2. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (great)
3. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (awesome)
4. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (very good)
5. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 (good)
6. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (all right)
7. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (average)
8. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (bad)

The only good one, "Goblet of Fire".

My rankings:

1. Prisoner of Azkaban (John Williams)

I love this score, all of the new thematic material, the medieval sound, the “Double Trouble” theme, “Buckbeak's Flight,” it's just wonderful. Of all of Williams' Harry Potter scores, this is the one I most hope for an expansion.

2. The Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone (John Williams)

While I agree that the film itself is overscored, it is undeniable that Williams nailed the heart of the franchise here. The only reason this score is ranked above Goblet of Fire is because it is the one that really started the movie series running.

3. The Goblet of Fire (Patrick Doyle)

Doyle's score is the most “English boarding school” of them all, and he came up with a plethora of fantastic themes that swirl throughout the score. The album has most of the highlights, but there is a lot more to this score, I'd really love to hear an expanded edition someday.

4. The Half-Blood Prince (Nicholas Hooper)

Hooper gets a lot of poop for changing the direction of the music in the series, but as has been mentioned earlier in this thread, I think that the blame for that ought to be lain at the feet of David Yates. I was not a particularly big fan of Hooper's score for The Order of the Pheonix, so I was quite surprised when I saw this film that I found myself rather enjoying the music. Dumbledore's haunting theme is a personal favorite, as is the more introspective music for the interpersonal relationships (“Harry and Hermione,” “When Ginny Kissed Harry”) His music for Dumbledore's death is one of the best cues by any composer for the franchise. There is a particularly nice moment in the film, not on the album, when Harry hexes Draco to the “Possession” theme from The Order of the Phoenix, as that is when Harry is acting most like Tom Riddle.

5. The Deathly Hallows Part 2 (Alexander Desplat)

Desplat's second score for the last installment in the series has “Lily's Theme” and several blood-and thunder cues for the final battle. The best part for me is “Dragon Flight.”

6. The Chamber of Secrets (John Williams, William Ross)

I found this to be well-done, but ultimately repetitive score. There are new themes that mix with the old ones, and I like them (“The Chamber of Secrets”), but it's too derivative of the earlier score to maintain its own identity.

7. The Deathly Hallows Part 1 (Alexander Desplat)

While this score certainly has its moments (“Snape To Malfoy Mansion,” the Death Eater theme), I find much of it to be a shapeless slog. I do like the theme-sharing (the music for the quest is the same as the music for Ron and Hermione, etc.), but ultimately this score leaves me cold.

8. The Order of the Phoenix (Nicholas Hooper)

This is my least favorite score of the franchise, although its relationship — in retrospect — to The Half-Blood Prince bumped it up a few notches in my personal estimation. A lot of the writing seems very simple to me, and I found many of the more sensitive areas clunky… an issue I didn't have at all with Hooper's next score.

I have to heavely disagree. I think continuity in music is really important and can enhance a scene (or 5 HP movies lol) by a lot. Imagine a Snape theme or Sirius death with "A Window To The Past".

Yes the story gets darker, but that doesn't mean that you have to leave all meterial behind. You can alter themes, develop them in new directions. Well like Lord of the Rings or Lost (or many others) do. We get emotionally attached to themes and remember them. But when a theme just get replaced for the next film and again and again the emotional impact is near zero (or not as high as it could be).

And it's not diversity at all when Desplat changes the Order of the Phoenix theme (7.1) into Nevilles theme (7.2) (which isn't used in Nevilles most heroic moment lol)

You really should check out

They recompose the movies 4-7.2 in the style of williams.

With that being said. now to my list. I rank the music on its own and not as the continuity mess that it is.
I love all 8 scores in their own way. Even 7.2 is a 7/10 for me. And I also would love if the remaining scores would get a expand/complete treatment like the first three ones. (looking at you LLL)

1. Goblet of Fire
I now its a chliché bomb but i love it. The Quidditch fanfare is just awesome. "Hogwarts Hymn" is one of my favourite Filmmusic cues of all time. and everything else is great as well. My 2nd favourite score of all time. (LLL please expand this beauty)

2. Prisoner of Azkaban
"Buckbeak's Flight", "Quidditch, Third Year" and the overall style with harpsichord and other older instruments. No need to say more.

3. Philosopher/Sorcerers Stone
I don't think it's overscored. It captures the overwhelmingly magic just too well. The themes are so incredible good developt that i cry everytime at the end when the Family theme appears in it's full glory...

4. Chamber of Secrets
"Fawkes the Phoenix" & "The Chamber of Secrets"...

5. Order of the Phoenix
That 6 minutes of "The Room of Requirement" is just pure magic. (LLL please expand this beauty)

6. Half-Blood Prince
"Opening", "Whizard Wheezes", "Malfoy's Mission" and everything onwards from "Journey to the Cave" are my favourites of the score. (LLL please expand this beauty)

7. Deathly Hallows Part 1
Favourites: "Obliviate", "Sky Battle", "Fireplaces Escape" & "Destroying the Locked". (LLL please expand this beauty)

8. Deathly Hallows Part 2
Favourites: "Lily's Theme", "Dragon Flight"... every piece with Lily's theme. And that Clarinet part in "The Diadem". (LLL please expand this beauty)

Prisoner of Azkaban, followed by Philosopher's Stone and Chamber of Secrets. I also like Goblet of Fire, but can't listen to Hooper or Bugsplat without crushing headaches.

Curious to see Prisoner of Azkaban mentioned as a favorite over and over.
Of the 3 JW scores, that's the one that I would edit most heavily to make a satisfying listen (I am of course referring to the LLL expansions). The original soundtrack release of that one is probably a good length, but I haven't spun that in years so I don't recall if I would agree with the choice of cues selected.
I recall liking the Goblet of Fire, Doyle is a favorite of mine.
I am completely unfamiliar with the Hooper and Desplat efforts.
