But now hearing more about this effort, I am 50/50 and very curious. The curiosity itself makes this FUN.
It will start off huge, not just because sheeple these days are taught to want to see any "blockbuster" but also because the smarter moviegoers will want to see if it doesn't insult one's intelligence.
Then it will drop off after several weeks.
Then finally, in the years to come, whatever good storytelling elements it possesses will cause it to be rediscovered and re-evaluated according to its merits.
In my area they are offering a free soundtrack if you call in for tickets. As I mentioned in a earlier thread it was 38 years ago as a kid I was one of the first people to see KING KONG in NEW YORK because I went to a early showing of a theatre that opened early on opening day. However times change, off to work I go today and tomorrow but I will catch it with my girlfriend in a few days down the line.
And please, everybody, read the whole reviews because sites like RT quote unreliably and draw weird conclusions by giving the label "fresh" or "rotten" just as they please although reviewers are able to weigh pros and cons, sometimes staying between "fresh" or "rotten".
The film was amazing. Not your typical monsters film. Edwards goes through different POVs during the action scenes of the first half. Desplat's score is awesome and totally brings a sense of action, danger and emotion.
Even though some of the best bits of the CD (the first half of The Wave, the middle part of Back To Janjira, the second half of Vegas Aftermath and Golden Gate Chaos, and the last seconds of Last Shot) are cut of the film or buried by the sound effects. There's more music missing from the CD, including more choir and brass writing.

False. The rating of "fresh" or "rotten" is assigned based on how many stars the REVIEWER gives the movie when he/she submits their review in the first place.
Just back from it and loved it! I'm a long time Godzilla fan and this film has now thankfully erased the memory of the 1998 GINO mess.Might be a bit slow paced for some as the build up is quite long but I thought it all worked well and had as serious a tone as this sort of thing could. The music was brilliant in the film. It really felt like an old-time thunderous monster movie score. Have to still listen to the cd as I've been holding off till the film so I don't know what's there or not but there was certainly a lot of great scoring going on throughout the film's running time. Huge sigh of relief after being so psyched to see this for so long.
TO SPOOK-Serious as it can be like BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS, KING KONG[06] ?. Than that is good news. Sounds like it is a winner. I imagine the effects are incredible?

Just saw it....loved film and score. I was happy to hear Ligeti's REQUIEM (2001 Monolith cue) make the film also...it was very effective in the trailer and works great in the film as well.
I just got home from seeing it and I loved it .Like all good monster movies, whether it be King Kong, Alien or Jaws, the monster is well hidden for the first half of the movie. I thought the screenplay was structured much like Close Encounters as it gives the backstory of the creatures evolution and the government involvement in covering up its existence. But when they really show Godzilla in all his glory, WOW !!!, I felt like a schoolkid once again. There is a sequence on the Golden Gate Bridge that is a going to be one of the most talked about scenes in sci fi history. If I do have any complaints of the film, it's that Elizabeth Olsen is greatly underused in her role. All other aspects of the production were first rate.
Except for Heisenberg and some nice tributes to King Kong, Jurassic Park and whatever else, it was LARGELY disappointing. The score was fine although where is that damn choir on the CD?!
I really do not understand why McWeeny did not like the score and found it too bombastic.
To single out this (perfectly measured) Desplat-score and never mention all the really bombastic (and not fitting) scores to other films seems very unjust to me.
