No spoilers: thee movie is good, not THAT good, full of great ideas; but certainly not TESB level. The score is a delight, at the movie I noticed only a new, very memorable theme (for the Rose character), but a lot of new arrangements for Episode VII themes, which already sounds classic. I liked a lot to hear my favorite, the Jedi Steps, in the first island scenes, and a lot of Rey and First Order/Kylo theme and the Resistance theme, ehich I didn't care much in the last movie but sounds great here. Looking forward to hear the album!

I'm loving the score in the context of being essentially Force Awakens, Part 2, but dammit, the quote of Aquerela Do Brazil makes me so mad!! If it was JW I can maybe forgive it as a musical in joke because it fit there, but not if it was because the director wanted some idiot meta gag on screen. Source music, music supposedly existing in a galaxy far, far away should never EVER reference an instantly recognizable melody from, well, HERE. Might as well have Frank Sinatra playing as elevator music or a CGI Rickles headlining at Canto Bright. Whatever the reason, WTH?!

Well I just got back from The Last Jedi. It is freaking epic, with some of the coolest surprises and one-liners of the saga, along with some serious nail-biters and use of The Force taken to a whole new level. Hamill's performance is worthy of a supporting-actor Oscar nomination---man, does he wear his character's lifetime of trials and tribulations on his face. The porgs----my god the porgs are adorbs. I love John Williams' score as heard in the movie. One of the reasons I'm such a die-hard film music geek is because it's such a demanding, disciplined profession. It still blows my mind how many hoops they have to jump through, utterly subservient to the beats on the screen and the whims of the director, and often competing with dialogue and sound effects. And for Williams to still be tackling movies like this---the old-fashioned way, with a pencil and score sheet---at 85 is beyond my comprehension. His score fits the movie like a glove, supporting the action without screaming "Look at me!" Sometimes I'd take myself out of the action and just listen to him do his magic. What a goddam privilege to still be able to go to movies 40 years after I first "discovered" him and be in awe anew. (And there's another score on this one's heels---for a freaking, and apparently excellent, Spielberg flick.) Tomorrow I'm going to see the movie again. (Yeah---as usual there's way too much to take in on the first viewing.) And I'll go buy the soundtrack and dive in. I've read the criticisms in various comments above, and from what I heard tonight my opinion is on the opposite side of the spectrum. I'm going to revere this music and the indelible scenes they conjure in my mind. And I will never be able to say "Thank you again, John" enough. -

It goes down easier if you take this as conclusive proof that Terry Gilliam’s Brazil is actually part of the Star Wars universe.

I think this thread should be retitled " STAR WARS EP VII: The Nerds Awaken"

Amazon UK are selling it in both Digipak and Jewel Case versions. However, much to my annoyance, when I pre-ordered it several days ago, that option wasn't available, so I've been sent the Digipak version.

Some random thoughts... For all the critics enthusing this as a bold new take on SW, it sticks pretty close to the 'tried and true' formula. Even when it seems it's going to TAKE A BOLD LEFT TURN, it kinda bottles it and plays it (semi) safe (this isn't criticism, I get they've got a billion dollar franchise to protect). There's a BIG SCENE, early on, that angered me and took me out of the film SO MUCH (talk about a speed bump) that it took a while to recover myself in the film. And it's a shameful rip from Guardians Of The Galaxy! The tension, suspense and drama in the Red Room sequence is amongst the best seen in a SW film. Great, powerful stuff! Some of the twists work a treat and really pulled the rug from under my feet. There are some VERY SILLY scenes and creatures, but as long as you remember 'this is a kids film', you'll be okay Having said that, while some of the humour is kiddie, some jokes land perfectly and work a treat. The film is over-scored. Just too much music (even if it is of a much higher quality than we are used to). It needs more silence to breath and pause. In a funny irony*, lots of the plot reminded me of the old Battlestar Galactica predicament. The final scene is one of the best of the series. Just a perfect summation of what SW is all about. The longing. The Wonder. The potential in kids. The randomness of The Force. The possibility of a Grand Adventure. I hope this is the character we follow in the Rian Johnson spin-off trilogy. I'll try think of some more.. *SW sued BG for aping their series too closely, back in the 70's.

HUGE speed bumps, I agree with McGann, and the music in the opening and end credits (in the film) was a goddamned mess, like the pages were out of order or something. "The Fathiers" cue in the film was the first one that made me want to hear the score on the album, but I haven't gotten to it on the CD yet.

I assume the "deluxe edition" is the digipack and the regular the jewel case? Okay, we saw the movie last night and I need to order the score now. Is there any verification of where I can locate (country) and purchase this score released in a jewel case? Thanks.
