I’ve listened to both discs a number of times now and read the liner notes and I must say this is an absolutely tremendous release in every regard. I was on the fence about getting it as I wasn’t sure I needed anything beyond the original album and 1998 expansion but I’m very glad I got it.
I think the decision to have each disc play as it’s own album works beautifully rather than have everything play in a complete and chronological fashion. I’ve made a chronological playlist but I think I’m more likely to regularly listen to the discs as they’ve been arranged, they’re brilliant and you can tell how hard Mike M must have worked to get the sequences to play so well. The only thing I don’t love is having the source music as part of the main program on disc 2, they’re so different tonally that I’ll most likely make them into their own album in iTunes instead. But a bit of tinkering for personal taste is advocated in the booklet! The source music itself is great though, what a treat to have Such broad genre music written by Williams himself!
Also, the sound quality is something else, a total revelation which allows you to revel in every single carefully crafted detail of the score.
And finally the liner notes are possibly the finest I’ve ever read. Even the section about the making of the film keep things firmly focused on the music which is refreshing and the notes are so illuminating and insightful that they help me appreciate the score in a much more thorough way than I’ve ever done in the past. I really can’t recommend this release enough!

Anyone else in their youth cranked up the volume as far as they could for the opening cue. That slow quite build up, then suddenly, BLAM!!!! The walls vibrate. Gives me chills every time.

The liner notes really are fantastic. I read them before listening, and my appreciation for one of my favorite scores grew based just on the notes; no telling how much growing it's going to do after listening to the discs!

Think it's fair to say the only thing more we could ask of this program is that it get a hi-res release at some point in the future when the average-budget audiophile can afford the system to play it back.
Maybe MQA will accelerate that.
