As fans of the first film/score will be aware, the sequel to How to Train Your Dragon is out next June, with John Powell returning to score after not working on any films since last year's Ice Age: Continental Drift. The first teaser trailer has been released and it contains what might be a snippet of the new score. It certainly sounds like Powell to me and although it's not the first film's main theme used, it definitely sounds within the same universe! This hints at an expanded use of choir, which I think Powell always uses so wonderfully. The short clip itself looks to retain the original's exciting flying action, let's hope it has the emotional resonance too.
Colour me excited. The first film was by far the best score I've heard by JP and the thought of him developing the old material and creating some wonderful new stuff is exciting. Plus, I knew a few cast members from the first film and it's great to see those young guys getting regular work!
It will be very hard to top the first film and this is generally a case where I don't think we need a sequel. But this teaser gives off a positive vibe. Hiccup looks older which is interesting. Powell has a great track record when it comes to producing awesome scores for animated fare. So I am sure he will deliver the goods.
On hearing the trailer music again I have to agree with you guys on it probably being by someone else. I do think it's very good though!
News has come in via Filmmusicreporter.com that "Sigur Rós frontman Jónsi will contribute three new compositions, including direct collaborations with composer John Powell, to the studio’s upcoming animated film sequel How to Train Your Dragon 2.".
New additions to the cast include Game of Thrones' Kit Harington, Cate Blanchett and Djimon Hounsou, who will voice alongside pretty much the entire original cast.
Personally I found the song by Jónsi on the first film's soundtrack very irritating, though it's better than a lot of the songs tacked onto these animated films lately. I like some of Sigur Rós' music as well, so I'll keep an open mind.
I hope the film's title gets a change somewhere down the line though, as it stands now it's clunky and lazy to the point of being ugly.
John Powell is composing the score for the sequel as confirmed at Comic Con. Some portions of the score will be a collaboration with Sigur Ros and Jonsi.
Nice to see an animated film that try's to be more than a comedy. Looks like there will be a dramatic edge. Prime material for Powell to score. Though not thrilled with the long lost mama angle. What made the first film a cut above the rest was the relationship between boy and dragon and this appears to continue in this film.
I was quite excited for the new score from Powell, as the first film's became a fast favorite. I wasn't sure if we needed another film, but this looks like it has the elements of a good sequel; the characters are older and have changed, the story is building upon the premise of the previous one. Not sure how I feel about that one particular bit of the trailer either, but I'm hoping that the final film will handle it well.
it was a good trailer and really can't wait to there the new themes Powell creates, but wasn't a fan of the surprise reveal. didn't give the whole movie away like the "Dream House" trailer but still. who knows maybe she's not really his mom
I swear, the music in that clip is tracked in from the first film. It's not just the same themes, it's the exact same performances, all sliced and diced by a music editor.
My guess is Powell's score was not finished in time for this clip's premiere, and they went with what they'd had in the temp.

I'm honestly surprised that anyone who knows the first score would think of the music in the trailer as new stuff. You all need an appointment with your otolaryrhinoceros or whatever the name is...

I'm not talking about the trailer (obviously not the first score, or even Powell)... I'm talking about the link directly above my last post, the "exclusive clip" from the sequel.
You may need an appointment with a "pay attention and keep up"-ologist.
Judging by that one internet clip, the score seems to be overwhelmed by the dialouge and sound fx, and i'm sure this will chage when we watch the final cut in theatre
The score itself, cant say much, i love the new arrangement for the old themes. The Jonsi song fits the scene, but it will be more epic if it uses score. The theme on the last minute of the clip is quite interesting though. Cant wait to hear the rest of the themes (valka theme, enemy theme, etc)
