I'm still enormously impressed by this score years after. This is truly Powell magnum opus, his "Empire strikes back" as it expends beautifully on already magnificent material from the first movie. The new themes are gorgeous and Powell expertise in theme and variation is really up to the best standards, particularly the "mother/family" theme. Few scores have stuff as exciting as "Dragon Races" and "Battle of the Bewilderbeast", as heartbreaking as "Stoick's ship" , as exhilarating as "Flying with Mother" or "Toothless Found" I like that this one has a more "classical sound" than the first (the action tracks, while being in a similar vein, flow better for me here) and I hope Powell expands on this in the future (the third movie has been pushed back again, to 2019 this time, BTW). For those not into it, can you explain why? I thought this score might delight fans of Williams or Giacchino thematic, expressive-based writing.

Oddly enough HTTYD is one of my least favorite Powell scores, and I love most of his work. Dragon's 2 knocks it out of the ball park, and it's a score I haven't heard the likes of since the 80's. I've yet seen Giacchino reach this level of development, and yes I would compare it to the likes of Williams from that time period too. My only nit pick is the score is to loud. I don't know whether there's just to much bombast, (it is relentless is it not?) or if it's the case the CD was mastered to loud. Which is a common complaint nowadays. It's certainly one of my top ten favorite scores of the decade.

I think the last re-recording I've got might be Pirates of the Caribbean. I'd love to hear a HTTYD suite from both movies. Especially live.

I was not a particular fan of Powell before - I liked a lot his kinetic Bourne scores, and HTTYD was for me a soundtrack of great highlights (you know, "this is Berk", "Forbidden Friendship", "Test Drive", "Romantic Flight"). I loved the themes but was not entirely sold on the whole thing; the action tracks were too busy and - for the lack of a better world - too "Remote Control" sounding for me ("heavy handed" perhaps?). But I love everything from the second opus, and the second half of the disc is absolutely phenomenal. In fact, come to think of it, it might be my favorite score of the last five years, something I would never have thought possible five years ago.
