Tricky.

1. ALIEN and ALIENS (yeah, cheating a bit here -- if I had to pick just one, I couldn't)
2. JURASSIC PARK
3. The Apu trilogy (again, cheating, I suppose -- if I had to pick just one, then PATHER PANCHALI)
4. BLADE RUNNER
5. PROFESSIONE: REPORTER

...or something.

If you really like films (& I've loved them since the mid-fifties), then you can't really pick just 5, 50 maybe, but if I narrow it to just the sixties, I can do a little list that makes some kind of sense:

What A Carve Up! (1961)
The Great Escape (1963)
Jason & The Argonauts (1963)
The President's Analyst (1967)
The Wild Bunch (1969)

The Swimmer
Straw Dogs
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
Apocalypse Now
Dead Of Night

This would be much easier if this was favorite five films per year or even decade.

I'll take 5 different genres, not to make it too boring smile

Drama : Once Upon A Time In America
Action/Adventure : Raiders Of The Lost Ark
Western : The Wild Bunch
Horror/terror : Jaws
Family : La Meglio Gioventu (The Best Of Youth)

Nice to see 'Sorcerer' and 'Empire Of The Sun' mentioned here, 2 very underrated films

In no order.

1. Back to the Future
2. National Treasure
3. Point Break (original)
4. Star Trek-The Motion Picture
5. Kelly's Heroes or JAWS or Heat or The Untouchables or Lethal Weapon or Apocalypse Now or To Live and Die in L.A. or.....

(Number 5 varies with my mood, but the other 4 are locked tight as my 4 favorite)

These lists obviously vary, and it always and highly depends on the moment someone asks, but if you do these lists now and then over the years, it is always interesting to see if movies change. So "favorites" -- as I understand it here -- are not necessarily "best" movies... favorites are those movies you never mind seeing again and probably have watched multiple times before. "Favorites" are those movies you force on your dates and potential mates... "favorites" are those movies that you buy, and probably buy multiple times if a better, remastered version comes out. I have put some thought into this some time ago for other reasons, so I can now more or less quickly pick "5" from among a larger roster of clear favorites, who are not weighed against each other. Just 5 favorite films that are very dear to me.

With these things in mind, my favorite five movies (in chronological order) are:

1. THE BIG COUNTRY (William Wyler, 1958)
2. C'ERA UNA VOLTA IL WEST (Sergio Leone, 1968)
3. CHINATOWN (Roman Polanski, 1974)
4. BLADE RUNNER (Ridley Scott, 1982)
5. SE7EN (David Fincher, 1995)

As always, favorite movies are subject to change without notice.

Jeez, henry, you make it difficult, having to narrow it down so much. But here goes:

1) STAR WARS (1977)
2) THE GODFATHER (1972)
3) ALIEN (1979)
4) JAWS (1975)
5) KING KONG (1933)

And I'll break the rules a little and add some "Honorable Mentions":

BACK TO THE FUTURE (1985)
AMERICAN GRAFFITI (1973)
A HARD DAY'S NIGHT (1964)
ALIENS (1986)
INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM (1984)
THE GODFATHER PART II (1974)
JFK (1991)
DUCK SOUP (1933)
THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY (1966)
THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939)

I'm just super tired because I just moved and I have both books and CDs, so I'm tired. George Miller hit it out of the ballpark with MAD MAX: FURY ROAD. How are you?
